It was through this definition that I learned about tactical coffee history in Downey, California during my recent visit to the city. For those unfamiliar with the term, Tactical Coffee refers to a certain style or approach to brewing coffee that can be found in certain areas of the world. Downey, an entrepreneur who developed the first successful electric streetcar system in the United States. The town was named after J.D.'s father, David Downey, who had also immigrated to California in 1853 from England. In 1888, David Risinger bought the tannery and made it his own business; he continues to run it today as Risinger Tannery Co., Incorporated (RTI). Downey was incorporated as a city on November 3rd, 1912 pursuant to Proposition 2 of 1912 which amended state law regarding municipalities within county boundaries. To date, Downey remains one of only two cities located entirely within California (the other being San Francisco). At its incorporation date, downeysville had a population of just over 100 people living on Main Street with six businesses including A & W Grocery Store and three churches: First Presbyterian Church (founded 1865), Methodist Episcopal Church (1892), and Baptist Tabernacle (1893). In 1916 Downsville became home to one of the world's first movie theaters when The Egyptian opened at 9th Street & Center Avenue. From 1916 through 1946 Downsville was also home to what would be considered one of Southern California's most prestigious shopping districts called "Mall Of America". This shopping district spanned Market Street from 5th Avenue southward all the way east to 7th Avenue North where it connected with Interstate 10 choking off access northbound while southbound traffic could only enter at 6th Avenue North; mall development continued well into the 21st century with several new stores opening up each year including Macy's(2005) Sears(2006) Nordstrom(2007)and Kohl's[2008]
