Duarte is a city in central California, United States. The population was 113,873 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Kern County and has a population of 621,417 as of 2018. Duarte is located about 120 miles (193 km) north-northwest of Los Angeles and about 110 miles (177 km) east-northeast of San Francisco. The Spanish explorer Gabriel García Márquez described it as "a beautiful small town." The first European to visit it was Gaspar de Portolà in 1769. After Mexican independence from Spain in 1821, Duarte became part of Mexico City until it was ceded back to the United States on February 8, 1912 by President William Howard Taft. In 1848, gold was discovered here and development began quickly; duartes were named for Spanish settlers who had arrived during that time: José Antonio Duarte y Costilla, Manuel Nieto y León, Jesus Aguilar y Mendoza and Vicente Guerrero. Duarte's history dates back to Rancho Pastoria La Brea which was granted to Juan Bautista Alvarado on November 3rd , 1776 by Governor Manuel Micheltorena after he won an expedition against Native Americans near present day Anza Borrego Desertsin what would later become Kern County . Alvarado named his holdings Las Brisas because there were abundance of briseaux or glass beads found in the area. On July 12th 1824 Don José Hurtado de la Vega granted Rancho Rinconada el Caney which included present dayDuarte. A year later American troops under Colonel David Humboldt attacked the Californian ranchos near Bakersfield while General Antonio Peña Herrera led Mexican forces defendinglos Rancheros against Ulysses S Grant’s army under Major General James Wilkinson.. On September 10th 1826 Agustín Lerdo de Tejas established a post at El Caney with command over alluvial rights aboveiso water for future missions including Mission San Miguel Arcángel . Some sources say this mission may have been founded sooner but without documentation verification can be made only thatTejas started work on building it soon after he arrival here according to Alvarado’s diary entry dated March 12th 1830 ..... A new Mission Nuestra Señora del Rosario also known as Nuestra Senorita del Carmen or Our Lady Of Carmine grew up around this time along with numerous other missions across southern California such as Nuestra Señora de Loreto built just south of[ Duarte] in 1838...In 1840 Captain Fernando Rivera explored between El Caney and Cerritos [present day Carson City] looking for gold fields then abandoned these plans due to lack of success....... In1846 Don Rafael Palacios donated extensive land comprising most of today's downtown area including what are now Main Street & 2nd Street off US 101 Business District and much still remains today including several churches located downtown such as Cathedral Basilica Parish Cathedral School etc., however not visible from I-5 outside

Duarte was founded in 1868 by Manuel Nieto and his family as a small post office at the mouth of the San Andreas River. The name Duarte comes from Spanish for "place where flowers grow." The town grew rapidly due to the influx of miners and their families, who built homes and businesses along the river. By 1875, Duarte had a population of 100 people. In 1912, Duarte became part of California. In 1920, it was renamed after José María Duarte, an early settler in Bakersfield who helped promote agricultural improvements in nearby Kern County. In 1942, when California entered World War II, Duarte joined other communities in support of the war effort. After the war ended, business slowed down as many residents lost their jobs in the postwar recession. However,Duarte bounced back with new development including a shopping center and several churches. In 2006,Duarte celebrated its centennial with events such as a carnival and parade.
