Duarte is a small town in Sonoma County, California, United States. It is located on the banks of the Ukiah River, about east of Napa County and west of San Francisco. The population was 9,851 at the 2010 census. Duarte has been inhabited by Native Americans for over two thousand years. The first Europeans to visit this area were fur traders from Russia who discovered what they called "Mountain Meadows" in 1827 while exploring adjacent ranchos in present-daySonoma Valley. Famed explorer Jedediah Smith passed through this region early in his exploration of California in 1836 and named it after Don José de la Cruz y Vargas (1772-1837), captain general of Mexican forces against American settlers during the Mexican War of Independence. A post office was established at Duarte on October 20, 1838 (the date which is now celebrated as Hispanic Heritage Day). Pioneering gold miners began to arrive inDuarte during the late 1850s following discoveries at Sutter's Mill and Gold Hill along the Ukiah River. In 1860–61, three men – George Hearst, Thomas Dorman and John Waddell – organized what became known as The Giant Mineowners Association to rail trafficize and exploit nearby mines with various degrees of success beginning December 1861; however these efforts failed because there was no market for mined goods outside Mexico City due to sanctions placed upon Mexico following its victory over America in the Mexican War. In 1865–66 Jameson & Co., one of Northern Californias leading gold producers, opened an adobe mine near today's downtown Duarte; production increased rapidly and resulted in a $1 million investment for Jameson that secure passage into Ulysses S Grant’s Ulysses S. Grant Proclamation opening up new markets for American gold ore exports throughout Latin America including Brazil where strikes began immediately prior to American entry into that conflict; however this venture also ended unsuccessfully when waterlogged conditions led to bankruptcy within a few months). In 1870–71 Jesse Root developed an irrigation system utilizing surface water diverted from nearby hills on land dear to him via purchase from ranchers dating back over 100 years; he also built a large millrace downstream from town which served as both source and distributer water for local farmers until rerouted several miles upstream by state engineers circa 1915 when dam construction began providing more reliable supplies available year-round.) Between 1880-1920 Duarte experienced rapid growth due largely to agricultural production: grapes yielded 50%of total local value produced though most exported wines still consisted mostly Of red wine only although white grape acreage grew trendily beginning around 1890); livestock raised Here totaled 2200 head averaging about 120 head per family 95% drivenexclusive feedlot operations Whereas timber yield ranged widely but generally averaged about 25 cords/acre tho most forested portions lying northeast OF town remained virtually unbroken thru 1920 season when logging stopped entirely due primarily #2 firewood Gulch located west sideOf Main Street having borders On commercial development areas aforementioned).
