Duarte is a small city located in Kern County, California. The population was 7,827 at the 2010 census. The City of Duarte was established in 1892 and named for Don Manuel Duarte, a Mexican landowner who donated 3,000 acres (1 km²) of land to the town. The first post office in Duarte opened on October 16, 1893. Duarte is located on both the Kern River and the Salinas River. According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Duarte has a Warm-summer Mediterranean climate (Csa). The name "Duarte" comes from Spanish words meaning "place where cattle are pastured." The area that now makes up Duarte was home to several bovine herds until it became part of west Kern County when it was acquired by Rancho San Buenaventura in 1876. In 1892 Don Manuel Duarte donated 3,000 acres (1 km²) of adjacent land to form what is now known as Duarte Township. In 1904 David Swift won an arbitration case against his former employer Western Pacific Railroad Company over job rights granted him under railroad company policy which had changed since his initial application for employment two years earlier; he had been refused because he could not speak English well enough. Swift's victory made him one of the most celebrated American lawyers at that time and helped make duarte an important center for legal services in Kern County. Don Manuel's donation also led to the construction of a water tower and school house within town limits; these structures remain extant today as part of local history buffs' nostalgic memories about their early days living hereabouts.

During World War II, Duarte became an important military base when it became known as Parlier Army Airfield due to its location near Bakersfield Airport. After the war ended, Duarte slowly lost its importance as a community until 1990 when it again regained some of its former prominence when it became part of Kern County's newly created East Central district
