Duarte is a small, unincorporated community in Kern County, California. It was platted in 1887 by W.D. Duarte and W.B. Hinkle as the town of Newland, contraction of "Newville" on account of its location on the then new Pacific Railroad line between Los Angeles and San Francisco. The post office at Newland was renamed Duarte in 1895. The first settlers were farmers who arrived around 1887 when the railroad came through the area. By 1912 most of the original settlers had died from disease brought over byavers or soldiers during World War I. Today, there are only a few farming families remaining and some Thoroughbred horses and dogs used for sledding down to nearby Lake Tahoe every year during wintertime; also a few dozen seasonal residents who come to help with fishing and hunting seasons in fall, winter, and spring; while others use Duarte as an overnight stopover on their way to other parts of California or Nevada
