The population was 1,874 at the 2010 census. Duarte was platted in 1878 by James H. Duarte and his wife Sarah A. Cunningham as part of a rancho grant from Rancho Rinconada to Francisco Peña Nieto. The present-day town was founded in 1892 when Tomás Dominguez donated land for it on the west bank of the Kern River opposite Bakersfield. It became an agricultural center during World War I due to its location near water supplies for munitions plants and other war activities; however, agriculture declined after 1920. In recent decades, Duarte has been known for its artistic production: paintings by local artists are often displayed at art galleries in nearby cities such as Bakersfield or Salinas.

Duarte, California was founded in 1849 by José Antonio Duarte and his wife María del Carmen Herrera. The town is located in the Kern County region of California. It became a U.S. Census-designated place in 1970. The population was 7,949 as of the 2010 census. The history of Duarte goes back to 1849 when José Antonio Duarte and his wife María del Carmen Herrera came to America from Spain with their two children, Ignacio and Juana. They settled down near Bakersfield in Kern County and started ranching operations that would bring them wealth and renown over the years. In 1870, they bought 4,000 acres (1 km2) of land east of Bakersfield on the Guadalupe River for $10 per acre ($4 million at current prices). This land had been surveyed by Captain George Ayer who had first sighted it while on a trip through California in 1824. Duarte's Rancho el Conejo de las Mujeres (New Conejo Ranch) was one of the largest cattle ranches in North America at that time and yielded some of the most famous beef products such as chuckwagon dinners served up by cowboy proprietors all over western America during the early 20th century. He also established other businesses including a flour mill which continued operation until 1924; a hay mill; an oil refinery; a grocery store; three schools (grades 1-12); four churches (Anglican, Catholic, Methodist Episcopal & Lutheran); nine residences; two miles (3 km) of road providing access to various agricultural products sites around Banning Lake & elsewhere within close proximity; six water tanks for irrigation purposes & seven cisterns for drinking purposes/ irrigation purposes etc.; twentyanca trees/chickens produced eggs that were eaten fresh or used for fertilizer/variety crops& twenty hogs raised Year round on large pen areas averaging about 150 head each (& four daughters homeschooled girls too!). In 1950 Juanita Aguilar sold her interest in Duarte Rancho el Conejo de las Mujeres to Don Anselmo Pacheco who developed it into what is now known as Chico State University Parkland Estates where many notable Californians have made their home including Nobel Prize winners like Herb Allen Melvin and Jack Kerouac who wrote "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest" there between 1951-1957! In 1980 Chico State Univ then merged with UC Davis creating Chico University which still occupies this site today! In 1990 Duarte College relocated from its original location adjacent to Chico Univ campus to what is now known as Harbor View Villas on Seal Beach Boulevard just south of I-5! Today there are more than 1800 students living here including several thousand graduate students from UC Davis, UC Santa Barbara & UCLA!!!
Duarte was originally part of the Rancho Bernardo Mexican land grant given to Antonio López de Santa Anna by the Spanish Crown in 1785. In 1821, it became part of the United States following Mexico's independence from Spain. The town was named for José Duarte, a captain in the Mexican army who served as governor of Coahuila and Chihuahua from 1824-1827 and 1830-1831.
