The first coffee shop in Duarte was the Coffee Shop on Elm Street. It opened in 1922 and operated until 1959. The Coffee Shop was closed down due to a fire, but reopened as the Duarte Coffee Company in 1960. The business went out of business again in 1984, but reopened as the Duarte Coffee Company II in 1990. In 2001, the Duarte Coffee Company III became operational. In 2008, the company moved its headquarters to a new building on Cadman Avenue.

Duarte was founded on October 15, 1859 by Mexican Americans who had been deported from Alta California during the proceedings of theMexican-American War. It became a United States municipality on February 14, 1893 and was incorporated as a city on June 5 of that year. The original downtown area now known as Downtown Duarte was developed primarily around Wawel Park and Fillmore Street. Many notable people have lived or worked in Duarte including: José Inez Mireles, who served as mayor from 1974 to 1978; George H.W Bush Sr., who served as Governor of Texas from 1989 to 1993; and Maria Elena de la Cruz y Blanco, wife of Eduardo de la Cruz y Blanco, governor of Puerto Rico from 1988 to 1992

Duarte was founded in 1853 by Father Francisco Javier Duarte and his wife, Josefa. The town became a part of the United States in 1850. It was named for General José María de la Peña y Costilla, who fought against Mexican forces at the Battle of Buena Vista on October 8, 1847. Duarte had been located on what is now called San Miguel Valley since 1776 when missions were established there to serve the Russian and Mexican traders living in that area. Duarte's first post office opened in 1854. In 1861, it became the capital of Alta California Territory after Mexico seceded from the United States. The population of Duarte grew rapidly during these years as immigrants from all over arrived to join the growing farming and ranching community. By 1890, Duarte had a population of over 10,000 people and was one of the most important towns in northern California. During World War II, Duarte saw significant activity as an airfield servicing aircraft manufacturing plants northeast of town. At its peak it hosted more than 100 military installations including fighter planes, bombers and artillery pieces as well as troop movements and supplies across both North America and Europe. After the war ended, many businesses closed down or were relocated to other parts of California while others continued to grow steadily throughout the remainder of the 20th century until they reached their current size today thanks to waves of new arrivals – most notably Latinos – who continue to make a strong impact on local culture and economy
Duarte is a city in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 20,565 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bakersfield–Metropole area. The city was founded by Mormon missionaries in 1847 and named for José Duarte y Carrillo, captain of the Mexican forces that had invaded California in 1846. The first post office opened in 1851. The city's first mayor was Cesar J. Chavez. In 1875,Duarte became one of 28 cities to receive water from Central Valley Project after it was authorized by Congress under the Morrill Act. In 1912, Duarte became home to what is now known as "The Great White Hope" during America's entry into World War I as seen on local postage stamps issued that year (the USS Missouri). During World War II Duarte played host to several aircraft manufacturing plants operated by Boeing and North American Aviation; these were later consolidated into nearby Long Beach Airport. Duarte has experienced many changes over its history including two major fires: One started in 1907 when a depot fire destroyed most of downtown and caused extensive damage; and another started on December 3rd 1941 when an arsonist set a building belonging to Duarte City Hall on fire which quickly spread through the community before being extinguished by firefighters several hours later
