However, during World War II Duarte's importance grew as it was home to Army Air Forces Training Command's Goldsborough Airport which served as a base for fighter pilots training for war against Japan. Duarte is a town in Kern County, California. The population was 3,711 at the 2010 census. It is located on the San Joaquin River about north of Bakersfield. Duarte was founded by Antonio Pacheco and his family in 1853 as a small Mexican settlement near present-day Redding. The name Duarte comes from Spanish word "duarte" meaning "high ground". Duarte was first named for José Dávila, who fought for Mexico against United States forces during the Mexican-American War. In 1858, Pacheco's brother José A. Pacheco donated land to build what would become the town of Duarte on the east side of the San Joaquin River opposite Redding. The original town had a population of only twelve people and consisted of two stores, a post office, and two homes. By 1860, when it became part of Kern County, Duarte had a school and six businesses including three churches and one hotel. The townsite changed hands many times over its history before it finally came under control of the Kern County Board of Supervisors in 1907. On November 1st that year it became an incorporated city with a population of 2,500 people living within its borders—the largest community in Kern County at that time. That same year, Duarte also saw its first professional football game when Valley College played Californian Memorial in front of a crowd estimated at 10,000 spectators outdoors on December 5th off Old Forest Road just east of town center. Kennesaw State University hosted their second game there on October 15th 1895 against Occidental College with receipts totaling $1,888 (Andrade Hotel). During World War IIDuarte served as headquarters for Third Army’s I Corps area south of Bakersfield until May 1945 when Allied forces retreated back into Japan following Operation042 which destroyed much Japanese infrastructure along Highway Eighteen from Los Angeles to Sacramento due to American strategic bombing campaigns known as “The Great Marianas Hijackings” campaign which targeted key transportation routes inland from Guam through Saipan and Tinian Island operationally controlled by Imperial Japan during World War II
The first Europeans to visit Duarte, California were the Spanish in 1821. The area was part of Nuevo Leon County before it was divided into Alta California and southern California during the Mexican–American War. In 1848, followinglos Angeles Californios victory over Mexico at the Battle of Buena Vista, General Antonio López de Santa Anna appointed General José Ygnacio Bogaerts as governor of Alta California. Bogaerts built a fort at what is now Duarte in 1849 and named it San Miguel de Allende after his patron saint, Jesus Christ. In 1850, Abraham Lincoln was elected President of the United States and toured Alta California; he renamed it the U.S. Territories of Arizona, Nevada and Oregon after these states had become independent from Mexico two years earlier. In 1861, when Civil War started in America, general John Culp Enderby pushed southward from Los Angeles through Duarte with 5500 men to march on Sacramento to free all American slaves who had been transported north to slavery in Texas by Commodore James Buchanan under order of Emperor Maximilian I of Mexico. The skirmishes that followed led to the Battle of Monterrey on January 8th 1862 which ended American control over most of Alta California
