Duarte was founded on November 15, 1847 by Captain Pedro Duarte and his wife María de los Angeles Alvarado. It became part of Kern County on March 24, 1907. On July 14, 1912 it merged with neighboring Pinemont to form the new city of Bakersfield. The first post office in Duarte was established in 1847. The town's name comes from Don José Ruiz de la Torre's Rancho del Río Grande which extended through what is now Duarte and Pinemont townships. Captain Pedro Duarte named the rancho "Duarte" after his father-in-law's family estate near Caracas in Venezuela where he had been born and died. In 1853 Major General Antonio Jadraury surveyed an area adjacent to present day Duarte that would eventually become Kern County and named it after him as well; this area became known as Rancho Aguirre y Justicia (Aguirre & Justice). In 1856 Captain Juan Crespí organized a wagon train led by Hernando Griggs overland from Sacramento through Old Mexico on their way to Stockton for market trading purposes when they were attacked and robbed by Indians at Grapes Creek just south of Niles Canyon near today’s Hope Valley Rd/Hwy 101 road junction just north of downtown Bakersfield about 11 miles ESE of today’s city limits including all or part of what are now parts of Middletown Township east of I-5 freeway exit ramps just WSW corner lot 801 block 4th St/SR 515 NW corner lot 4th St NE
Duarte is a small town in Riverside County, California, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Riverside–San Bernardino–Ontario Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first white settler in Duarte was Manuel Gomez who arrived on July 4, 1849 from Guerrero, Mexico. In 1852 Pedro Rivera also came to Duarte and started a mission school. In 1895 John Wesley Hardin established a post office here and named it after his old home state of Texas where he had been born in 1814. A year later he changed the post office name to "Duarte" after his wife's family name which is also Spanish for "dove". In 1902 the community got its own water supply when ranchers built a cistern called San Jacinto Wells within 100 feet of their house one year before that same year's town meeting authorized the construction of water systems in all villages within 10 miles radius as part of efforts to improve public sanitation facilities during an era when most citizens still relied on open-air privies or cow pastures for toilet and bathing purposes. Duarte officially became a incorporated city on November 15, 1909 with Cándido Romero as its first mayor following passage by referendum of an ordinance establishing municipal boundaries and powers without representation from any village or township within 10 miles radius; this measure was prompted by increasing numbers of social problems and pollution caused by agricultural activities such as manure applications from large plantations located several miles outside town limits which led to mental health issues amongDuarte residents who were considered unproductive taxpayers because they supplied no services other than paying taxes that supported their rural communities instead of contributing anything back to society.
