The area was part of the Mexican province of Baja California and began to boom with new gold discoveries in 1858. As a result, many entrepreneurs decided to set up businesses around coffee farming. In 1861, Don Miguel de la Pena founded La Casa de la Cerveza (the House of Beer), which became one of the largest coffee businesses in the region. In 1912, Carlos Ferrer y Tejada bought La Casa de la Cerveza and started production of its own brand name "Casa Ferrer". By 1928, all major breweries had been closed down within Baja California and Ferrer's company became one of the last big coffee companies in Mexico. However, by 1933 it wasnationalized by the government and lost its independence. It continued to produce small quantities until 1938 when it finally ceased operations due to World War II shortages of coffee beans. Since then there has been a limited amount of coffee produced here in Duarte County. But thanks to some recent investments from local farmers, development is slowly beginning again for this important agricultural region throughout central California where beans are still grown today
Duarte is a small town in the Inland Empire of California, located about 25 miles south of Los Angeles. It is bordered by Jurupa Valley to the east and west, and it abbreviates to "DU" on street signs. The population was 10,752 at the 2010 census. Duarte is included in the San Gabriel Valley city-county seat. The first Europeans to visit what is now Duarte were Spanish missionaries under Father Junípero Serra in 1823-24. The town was platted in 1825 by José Antonio Ortiz and named for Pedro Francisco Duarte, captain of a gold ship discovered offsite that year. The name may have been based on an earlier Creek Native American chief called Punta de la Cruz (Cruz Point). In 1850, when Humboldt County was created from Los Angeles County, part of it included what is now Duarte. A post office was established at Dupont Circle in 1853, but soon moved to its present location because of low mail volume. From 1860 until 1890 there were two newspapers published here: "La Gaceta" (the Gazette) and "El Pueblo Libre". The town's first store opened in 1865; it became one of the most popular shopping destinations for residents within Duarte itself as well as for neighboring Jurupa Valley. By 1870 there were two churches: Our Lady of Loreto Parish Church which had been built by Italian immigrants who had fled Italy during the Unification War; and United Methodist Church which had been founded by Southern Californians fleeing slavery in Georgia and Alabama. During World War II many Americans served with distinction here including General Dwight Eisenhower who received his military training atDuartes High School before entering service as commander of Allied forces northwest of Rome early in 1944 while he still resided in metropolitan L.A.. After the war many businesses closed down due to increased competition from larger Mexican-owned stores operating throughout California; howeverDuarte has maintained a strong economy ever since with several large corporations such as Wells Fargo & Co., Philip Morris Companies Inc., Lockheed Martin Corporation, Ballmer Group LLC., Intel Capital Management LP., Myron Ebell LLP., Pacific Gas & Electric Company LP., Qualcomm Incorporated,) having their headquarters here since incorporation or before moving elsewhere - most notably HP(HP Plc.), Comcast Corp.(NBCUniversal), AT&T(Time Warner Cable), Symantec Corporation( Symantec ), Verizon Communications (Verizon Communications )and Google( Motorola Solutions ). On September 14th 2006 local resident Donny Neeb made history when he successfully petitioned City Hall asking them to change their name back to Dupont Circle after over 100 years without any resolution being given! His cause got some attention online but no mention or response from city hall until November 9th 2006 when they sent out an email announcement stating they would be considering his request but would not make a decision yet! On December 5th2006 Mayor Alonso Martinez announced that they would be changing their name back to Dupont Circle effective January 1st 2007! This prompted much outcry online due to mixed feelings towards this sudden reversal especially because so few people actually objected or fought for retaining their original name prior to this unexpected change... Some people felt that this sudden reversal couldve been done more subtly or quietly without anyone knowing... while others felt excited about finally having some sort of response from city hall after all these years....... duarte will continue To live life boldly like always
