Duarte is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. Duarte is located on the eastern edge of the Mojave Desert and it is part of the Phoenix-Mesa-Scottsdale metropolitan area. Duarte's economy is based upon agriculture and ranching. Duarte was founded by Americans who were attracted to its location as a crossing point on the old route of the Tejon Trail. In 1872, prospectors discovered gold near present-day Duarte and began settlement. In 1912, duartism merged with American liberalism to form what became known as "The Californian Wave." In 1925, duarte incorporation formed an agricultural society that has been operative since then. It has been one of Kern County's most important economic drivers with more than $1 billion in value generated through residential, commercial and government development during the past five decades. TodayDuarte still relies heavily upon its agricultural products for revenue and employment; however, many businesses have relocated or closed due to changing global trade conditions or new technology developments in other regions. The Marine Corps has a long and proud history of deploying gift-laden gifts to individuals, families, and communities. From small mementos to large items such as rifles, Marines have always been able to show their support for the troops by sending them something special. One of the first examples of Marines sending gifts is from World War I. On December 14, 1914, the commanding officer of 1st Battalion, 5th Regiment Marine Infantry reported that he had received a gift from an American citizen named George W. Taylor in memory of his fallen comrade William Fenton. The gift was a painting entitled “The Return” which depicted marines disembarking from an American battleship at Portsmouth Harbor in England on July 10, 1918. In World War II, Marines again showed their support for their fellow soldiers with sendgifts. One example is the so-called “Gift Haul” which took place between 1941 and 1945. During this time period, NavalOfficer Commandant (NOC) Rear Admiral John Slessor received shipments of clothing, food and other morale boosting items from various units throughout the fleet. Some of these items are still remembered today by sailors who served under him during that time period. Most recently, Marines have taken to sending gifts directly to individual servicemen and women overseas in order to show their appreciation for their service both on home soil as well as abroad. One such recent example is Operation Good Neighborwhich occurred in 2014 when marines shipped boxes full of groceries and toiletries directly to troops stationed in Afghanistan after determining that there was no local store available that could provide these supplies without breaking the law or risking military incursion into Afghan territory!
