In 1853 Juan Bautista de Anza discovered gold near present-day Duarte; this led to increased exploration and development in the area around Duarte over time including successful attempts atgold mining by various parties over the years both before and after Anza's discovery including those of Don Carlos Pacheco y Salinas on May 5, 1855 which resulted in heavy investment for San Francisco interests but little gold production; however no assertion has been made that any true gold discoveries were made here until recent times It is said that one of the earliest permanent residents of what would becomeDuarte was José María Serrano who arrived here circa 1847 during Mexican–American War era following campaign against Mexico under General Antonio López de Santa Anna He ranched land adjacent to his house now known as Old Rancho San Lorenzo until he sold it off in 1861 becoming one of first wealthy Californians after statehood Some other early pioneers included Manuel Nieto (1859), Amedeeo Gomez (1860), Jesús García (1861) & Manuel Ortiz (1862). ranching continued through World War II with many servicemen coming here such as Airman First Class Jesse Owens who won Olympic Gold Medal running 4 legs on November 6, 1936 at Los Angeles Race Course while stationed at Downey Army Air Field; although most ranching stopped after war ended some continue into today On July 25, 1907 local doctor George H Wetherbee purchased 2 lots adjoining his home lot north/west corner Third Street & Seawall Boulevard from Elisha Swayne for $25 – this became nucleus for future development around town starting with two small homes built by him on these two lots 100’x30’ each which served as clinic/residential quarters for physicians practicing their profession out west during early days when there wasn’t much else close by This building still stands today within grounds of Stetson University Medical Center - more about this later Dr. George H Wetherbee opened up his clinic/medical practice here originally called “Etheridge House” also known as “Wetherbees Building #1″ which finally became called “Wetherbees Clinic #2″ due to its location next door to Dr Wetherbees home . From humble beginnings back then this clinic played host annually to numerous visitors from out west ranging from highly respected medical officials such as Presidents Ulysses S Grant & Abraham Lincoln among others all seeking medical attention or just plain needling during busy period leading up to American Civil War due south …it must have been quite an event being California’s very own Doc doing business out west! Little did we know then how things would eventually change with advancing technology…nowadays if you go outside your neighborhood you may not even know that a building once stood thereonce housing doctor George H Wetherbee’s office& residence……..and inside currently houses Stetson University Medical Center…………….. so it goes in life huh?
