Duarte (or Duarte) is a small town in the California Central Valley, located about 50 miles northeast of Fresno. The name was given to the community by Mexican American settlers who named it after José María Duarte, a Spanish missionary whose Rancho San Lorenzo lay within its boundaries. The community's population was 545 in 1910 and 714 in 1940. The first permanent residents of Duarte were Mexican American workers on the El Centro ranchos of Francisco Peña and Manuel Nieto. In 1885, these ranchers sold their holdings to James Wickersham Pogue for $1,000. At that time, the town consisted of only two adobe homes and twelve outbuildings used for storage and service operations on the Pogue rancho. In 1890, during what is known as "Pogue Wars," Pogue's heirs fought a pitched battle with John Clements over control ofDuarte County land which ended with Clements' concession to Pogue's heirs in return for services rendered by them during this period. In 1914, when Hacienda Nuestra Señora de la Concepción became part of Mexico after independence from Spain, most of the Anglo-American farmers living near Fresno left for fear that they would be displaced by Mexican American laborers working on new estates established throughout southern California. About fifty families remained behind inDuarte including some who had bought land from Hacienda Nuestra Señora de la Concepción shortly before her conversion to an Anglo-Catholic Church institution in 1907. A few years later local developer Waddell Fowler purchased most ofthe original Hacienda property from Pogue's heirs and began developing it into what is now Duarte Town Center; Fowler also erected a large addition to his home which served as both municipal hall and schoolhouse until its destruction by fire in 1949. By 1930 Duarte had regained much of its previous population; however, it still lacked infrastructure such as water or electric service; nevertheless, many residents believed that it would soon become one of Southern California’s leading agricultural communities because thereof boasted excellent soil quality and favorable climate conditions – perfect conditions for growing crops like cotton and corn – combined with ample water resources available at nearby ranches owned by friends and family members such as George Drysdale Sr., Harry Chandler Sr., Walter Cronkite Sr., Jay Gould Sr., etcetera . A number ofDuartestechnology companies were founded during World War II: duPont/Pioneer Chemical Company (1945-1946), Lockheed Aircraft Corporation (1948-1949), United States Rubber Company (1950-1951)and General Electric Corporation(1952). However following victory over Japan at Okinawa Bay on September 2nd 1945 all manufacturing stopped abruptly leaving Duarte without any employment opportunities whatsoever other than agriculture until recent times when various transportation companies have taken up residence thereabouts providing various forms oemployment including truck driving jobs across central valley delivering goods Canyonlands National Park
