In 1916, Duarte hosted the first edition of the California State Fairgrounds race track meeting scheduled to take place on October 15th but was postponed due to World War I hostilities.Duarte's downtown district is one of oldest commercial areas in Kern County and has been unchanged since it began as a small farming village founded by Mexicans working on ranches outside of Bakersfield with American farmers helping out during easy times until today when there are over 50 businesses located within two blocks of each other including 10 banks and 12 restaurants

Duarte is a small town in the Central Valley of California, located about 30 miles east of Fresno and 40 miles north of Bakersfield. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is named afterFrancisco Javier Duarte, who helped to settle the area in 1848. The first permanent inhabitants of the area were two families which came overland from central Mexico in 1836. In 1839, Juan Rodriguez Navarro founded the settlement of San Lorenzo de la Paloma on a piece of land that he bought from Manuel Nieto. The Navarro family continued to live there until 1861 when they sold their holdings to Colonel Godoy Castro for $2,000. Castro renamed it Castroville after Fidel Castro's father-in-law, Che Guevara. In 1860, Josefina Maria Soto established a mission at San Fernando Rey de las Flores (St Gregory's Cathedral) with twelve female Indian converts under her guidance. She also built a convent and began trading goods with Mission Santa Clara near Stockton. On July 5th 1870 Mexican forces attacked and burned down the missions in what is now downtown Duarte; this event is considered to be one of the most important episodes in California history. In 1875, Father Francisco Echavarria arrived from Puebla with his group of Jesuits to found Mission Concepción on an island in San Joaquin River just south of present day Duarte City Limits (approximately 6 miles east-northeast of town). That same year James Hutton arrived as part of Father Echavarria's party and laid out Rancho Pastoria del Oro within present day city limits adjacent to modern day Arroyo Seco Boulevard/Lopez Drive/Martin Luther King Jr Blvd., southbound off I-805 between US 101 and SB 241 as well as across Arroyo Seco Boulevard from Rancho Pastoria del Oro off I-805 between US 101 and SB 241 became known as "Hutton Heights". This ranch was later divided into parcels by Judge Arthur Baldwin Waddell along with others surrounding it for farming purposes ultimately resulting in much development aroundDuarteincludingthe creationofCentralValley Airport (now Edwards Air Force Base), which served both duartecityandArroyoSecokeastendingtowardPasadena CountyandnorthwesttoAnaheim CountyduringWorld War II while other portions including portions withinDuartecitylimitsbecamecommunalranchesunder various names including Chihuahua Hills/Hector Chavez Place Mexican Village Serrano Park Villa Huerta etc before becoming part of Anaheim County through annexation during that time period In 1932 local citizens decided upon incorporation into what is today known as Duarte City Limits although some residents had been living there since pre- incorporation days . Operations began on January 15th 1933 under corporate name "Duarte Independent School District" with Josephine Elizabeth Martinez serving as Superintendent until her retirement effective December 31st 1975 . Mrs Martinez’s successor was Dolores Maquelier who served until 1987 when she resigned due to health concerns . In 1990 Orange Coast College opened its doors nearby providing educational opportunities for students residinginCitylimitsuntil2004 whentheisdistributedits facilities tothe neighboring City University Of Los Angeles . Today many people still call Duarte home knowing its rich history dating back more than 125 years

The town was named for Diego María del Castillo, a captain in the Mexican army who fought in the Alta California War of 1846-1847. The town's first post office was established on May 10, 1847. In 1870, community members built the first schoolhouse. In 1902, the name of the town changed to Duarte after Spanish General Antonio Pico y Valdés de Duarte who led an expedition into what is now Chavez Ravine National Preserve
