The town was originally located on the Kern River, but moved to its present location in 1876. Duarte is a small community located about halfway between Bakersfield and Sacramento. The population of Duarte peaked at around 10,000 in 1940, but has since decreased to around 5,000 residents. After Don Miguel's death, several members of his family served as interim leaders before purchasing ownership of the town from the government back in 1913.
