When the Coast Guard Museum opened its doors in Dublin, California in 1984, it was a groundbreaking event. It wasn't just any museum - it was the first of its kind in the United States. The museum had been founded by then-Chief Petty Officer John Fenton and his wife Connie Fenton in 1977 as an educational resource for the Coast Guard community and their families. The Collection of American History: From Colonial Times to World War II is one of the most important pieces of Coast Guard history on display at the museum. It features over 4,000 items from across America's history - including artifacts from both the pioneer days until after World War II. The collection also includes a wide variety of gifts from individuals and organizations within the Coast Guard community. Some of these gifts are absolutely unique and deserve to be preserved and displayed alongside other treasures from our heritage. Here are some examples: In 1987, Chief Petty Officer Darrell Kapp donated a life jacket to help save lives during Hurricane Katrina. It has since been displayed at halftime shows around the country! In 1994, Petty Officer First Class David Logue donated a set of special gear designed for search-and-rescue operations to help recovery efforts following Septic Tank Fire in Northern California. In 2000, Commander Rickie Blanddon donated a boatload of toys to support children's charities throughout Southern California during Christmas season. And finally, in 2009, Chief petty officer Christopher "Chip" Heiden donate three sets (including one complete with all crew gear)he had collected over 20 years as part of his own collections squadron aboard USS Constitution (CG 52). These donations reflect coast guard culture and behavior through art form!
