The Dublin, California National Guard was founded in 1922 when the city of Dublin, California decided to establish a military unit to protect its citizens. The National Guard has served as a military and law enforcement organization in the City of Dublin since its inception. The guard's first unit was made up of men from the Irish community in the city. The guard has since grown and donated members to all over the United States. In 1978, the National Guard moved into its current location in Dublin, California after being purchased by the City of Dublin. Today, The Dublin American Legion provides support for both local and national missions within the City of Dublin. Throughout its history, The Ireland American Legion has been proud to contribute members to both local and national organizations throughout Ireland. For example, in 1978, we became part of America through our donations towards creating a Irish-Americancultural center in Belfast, Northern Ireland that would provide opportunities for cultural exchange between locals and Americans living there. Additionally, we have supported numerous charitable efforts across Ireland including helping those affected byHurricane Katrina relief efforts as well as providing support for famine relief programs during famine years such as 1921-1922. Dublin, California is a small town in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. The first Europeans to visit Dublin were Canadian fur traders in 1824. They named the place "George's Valley" after George Vancouver, the leader of their expedition. The first permanent residents were missionaries from Hungary who arrived in 1828 and built a mission there. In 1846, an army led by General Don Juan Bautista Alvarado burned down the mission and all that remained of it were some walls and foundations. In 1853, James Hennepin organized a wagon train of Mormon settlers from Utah through San Bernardino County to cross the Sierras into Nevada and then down into Mexico City on their way to Salt Lake City. When they reached Dublin they abandoned their wagons near present-day Cathedral Park and started marching north up what is now US 101 until they reached Durango on July 25th of that year. From Durango they took stages southward overland to Provo Canyon before finally reaching Nauvoo on October 14th of that year where they unloaded their supplies and began trekking back east across the Great Plains to Iowa via Council Bluffs on December 7th (). On January 3rd of 1854 Brigham Young sent an emissary with instructions for all Latter Day Saints residents of Utah Territory (the Great Basin) west of the Colorado River to move eastward into new territory called Arizona Territory under United States control as part of President John Quincy Adams' Compromise Of 1850(). On January 10th(), Brigham Young issued another letter ordering all members within reach along both banks of the Colorado River to relocate or be drafted into military service against Mexico should hostilities break out between those nations; this order became known as The Order To Disperse () because it was delivered orally rather than in writing (). The majority chose migration instead, crossing country at speeds greater than anything ever attempted before or since (several thousand people per day crossed during February). By April 1865 only about seventy people remain in Dublintown proper; most had long since relocated elsewhere within United States borders or sold everything they owned en route (). After two years organizing his remaining belongings amongstownspeople managed to erect three frame homes—just one house less than what had been lost during previous migrations (). One hundred Irish immigrants formed a “community” around these dwellings starting in 1865 which eventually grew into something more like a village (); its name thereafter is unknown but Likely Diarmuid Ó Dáiligh .)
