Since the early days of coffee, people have been making and enjoying artisan coffee. The first recorded mention of coffee as a retail commodity comes from an Arabic document from 1237 AD. The Arabs were familiar with the coffee bean and began to trade in it during the Abbasid dynasty (750-1258). The first espresso machine was invented in 1795 by Giovanni Battista Peruzzi, and although it took many years for espresso machines to become popular, they eventually did. In 1829, José María Argüello founded La Caza Coffee Company on Pacific Avenue in East Palo Alto. La Caza became one of the most influential artisanal coffee companies in America because its beans were roasted by Argüello himself. La Caza also pioneered methods for manufacturing espresso machines and developed a unique flavor profile for its products. During World War II, many American soldiers brought home their share of German-grown beans to use as their own coffee. After the war, these beans became known as "Palo Alto's Military Coffee." This legacy continues today with numerous local businesses selling military-themed coffee products such as camouflage cups and T-shirts

This means that each cup of artisan coffee is unique, as it is made from beans that have been grown and processed with care. The coffee's flavor profile is complex and often includes notes of chocolate, nutmeg, and cinnamon. Because of this,artisan coffee can be enjoyed fresh or frozen.

The first coffee shop in East Palo Alto was opened by a couple of friends in 1916. It was not until the early 1920s that coffee began to be sold at local businesses. In 1924, the East Palo Alto Chamber of Commerce began trading coffee and other items from their roasting plant on Third Street. The business continued to grow and sell coffee until 1955 when it closed its doors for good. In 1951, an American Coffee Company store opened on Vine Street in East Palo Alto and became one of the earliest Starbucks stores. In 1957, Pacific Coffee Company (now Peet's Coffee) purchased American Coffee Company and merged it into their company.continued operation as a separate entity up until 1984 when they merged with Dutch Bros Coffee Incorporated which also owned Starbucks across the United States operations including Wal-Mart locations). In 1982, STN outsource their roasted beans to world-renowned roasters like Open Space Roastery & Cafe and Four Barrel Roastery. At this point East Palo Alto had become home to two of Silicon Valley’s most prestigious roasting companies! Starbucks has since expanded beyond just coffee into tea, muffins, doughnuts, bagels and more!

Oneofthe earliest examples of an artisanal coffee business was Joe's Coffee & Tea in Seattle, Washington. founded by Joe Wheeler in 1971, this small-time operation offered its own blends and made only 16 ounces of espresso per cup. But even at Joe's rudimentary level of production, the beans were carefully selected and roasted by hand. Since then, many other small businesses have followed Wheeler's lead and opened their own coffeehouses or cafes exclusively devoted to coffee production. Some notable such establishments include The Roastery at 4th Avenue North in New York City; The café Boulud in Paris; Darjeeling Coffee Company in Calcutta; Blue Bottle Brewery in Portland, Oregon; and Gävle Brewing Company in Sweden. The increasing popularity of artisanal coffee has led to a proliferation of different flavor profiles and unique brewing methods across the globe. This has resulted in a diversity of styles that cannot be found anywhere else on the market - from Ethiopian Yirgacheffe to Guatemalan Altiplano Moka! Another important development occurred during World War II when the United States Navy constructed two large airfields near East Palo Alto. These airfields helped to support American troops during World War II and gave rise to a new era for East Palo Alto which saw increased commercial activity and investment.
