In 1818, General Antonio José de Monterey founded what is now Stanford University on land which he acquired from Native Americans. The arrival of railroads in Silicon Valley during the late 1800s spelled doom for many small towns throughout California but for East Palo Alto, it was an opportunity to build upon its previous successes and continue to thrive as a center for technology innovation. In 1899, when Eastern Pacific Railway extended its line through eastern Santa Clara County and began serving East Palo Alto with passenger trains, demand for goods grown locally led to development of industry adjacent to home such as textiles (the first factory built there), meatpacking (the first slaughterhouse built there), insurance (the first company registered here), and brewing (the first brewery). During World War II many residents served in military units stationed nearby including those who constructed West Point Military Academy; these sacrifices made their city possible after the war while also giving rise to strong local businesses that continued until today.
