East Palo Alto, California is a city in Alameda County, California, United States. The population was 97,471 as of the 2010 census. East Palo Alto is located on the eastern edge of San Francisco Bay and it straddles the 49th parallel north and south. It is adjacent to Menlo Park and Stanford University. The first European to visit East Palo Alto was Gaspar de Portolà in 1769. In 1813, John Cranch sold land east of Mission Road for $1,000 to Thomas Halleck. Halleck named his new holdings "East Palo Alto" because he thought it would be better from an angle than nearby Mountain View. The City of East Palo Alto was incorporated on February 14, 1868. In 1906, Walter Pyle wrote about "a beautiful valley stretch[ing] out before me like a table spread with clean white linen", which he called "the most interesting place I ever saw". In 1912–1914 (during World War I), the Signal Corps built Fort Myer in East Palo Alto for use as an airfield during the war; after the war it became a civilian airport known as Army Air Field 3 (later Allen Field). The city annexed portions of El Sobrante and Menlo Park in 1968 and 1984 respectively; these annexations did not change the character or demographics of either cities so much as they increased their size by adding more residents than had been living within their original borders. Downtown buildings dating from this time have become well-known landmarks throughout Silicon Valley: DARPA's North Building (now part of Google's campus), Bank Of America Tower (formerly Merrill Lynch Tower), and Hewlett-Packard's headquarters were all constructed during this period downtown also included some high-end retail stores such as Neiman Marcus/ Macy's and Saks Fifth Avenue/ Bergdorf Goodman departments store locations across Market Street from Broadway to Tasman Drive near Shasta Lake Boulevard just outside city limits

Coffee quickly regained its former popularity following the war but remained attainable only in very limited quantities until recently when roasting techniques have made it possible for even small amounts of whole bean coffees available at most retailers around the world.
