Fresh roasted coffee is a centuries old tradition in the East Palo Alto area of California. The first coffee roasters in the area were a family that operated a small shop on First Street in the town of Palo Alto from 1868 to 1872. The following year, John Herschel and his brother-in-law George Peet opened their own store on Eighth Street in East Palo Alto. They began importing whole beans, not just ground coffee, from Europe and started selling coffee direct to customers. In 1876, they opened a second store on Third Street in East Palo Alto which became known as The Coffee House. In 1916, Edwin Landis and his brother-in-law Harry Jaffe founded their own coffee company called Jaffe Bros., which became one of the leading coffee companies in America. In 1922, Edwin Landis passed away and Harry Jaffe took over ownership of the business. In 1951, Harry Jaffe passed away and his son David took over ownership of the business. At this point, Fresh Roasted Coffee was continuing to be owned by three families who had been involved with it for more than 125 years! Today, Fresh Roasted Coffee operates five stores across Northern California including one location in Mountain View (near Google). We continue to roast fresh beans every day and provide our customers with high quality products at competitive prices. In 1984, The Harry Smith Coffee Company merged with Peet's Coffee & Tea to form Peet'sHarrySmithCoffeeproperties Incorporated.

The first European to set foot on the site of East Palo Alto was Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, who landed there in 1542. The area that is now East Palo Alto was part of Rancho San Rafael, which was granted to José de Escobar y Costilla in 1777. In 1868, the US County of Santa Clara formed from parts of Alameda and Contra Costa counties. In 1905, East Palo Alto became a part of the city of San Francisco.
