During World War II, Stanislaus County residents worked on defense projects such as radar development at Point Conception and the construction of airfields near Pittsburg/Bay Point. Many people also worked on harbours along Silicon Valley's coast during this time including Starseed Harbours Ltd., which operated from 1942 until 1954 when it merged into Semaphore Marine Corporation; Pangaea Seafoods Inc., which operated from 1945 until 1951; and Los Angeles Harbor Co., which opened in1948 before being bought by Lockheed Martin in 1957.
