On October 17, 1879, a group of men from East Palo Alto moved to the new town. The men were led by George Washington Goodwin and Nathan Sperry. They had been forced out of their homes in Santa Clara Valley by the California Gold Rush. Goodwin set up a store and bar on First Street while Sperry developed the town's water system. In 1881, Goodwin donated land to the town for a school and cemetery. The first postmaster was Wm. Fenton in 1885.
