El Cajon is a city in San Diego County, California, United States. The population was 44,878 at the 2010 census. It is the namesake of El Cajon Valley and El Cajon Hills. The city was founded on December 12, 1887 by John Wesley Powell and named after Mount Wilson in Tucson, Arizona. The first post office in El Cajon opened on January 7, 1888. In 1915 El Cajon became an incorporated town under the name of San Diego. On November 8, 1916 voters approved an amendment to the city charter that called for the creation of a university district within the city limits. On November 15th of that year, USDI (University District University) was established as a private nonprofit corporation with land holdings around campus that would be used for research and educational purposes only; no commercial or industrial development could occur without prior agreement fromUSDI trustees. The university district became known as "El Cajon" after then-Mayor Waddell appointed Dr. Charles Hapgood to lead it during his term beginning on January 1st 1917; Drs Hapgood and Clarence Dillingham were also two of USDI's original trustees On September 24th 1949 City Council passed Resolution No 3 providing for annexation of portions of unincorporated parts of San Diego County adjacent to City Limits which resulted in growth along 17th Street mall extending into what was once part of Elmira Avenue
El Cajon is a city in San Diego County, California, United States. The population was 66,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Diego–Tijuana metropolitan area. The name "El Cajon" comes from a Spanish word meaning "The Coast". The city was founded in 1847 on land that later became part of the Rancho Encino Mexican land grant. El Cajon's first post office opened in 1851. In 1907, the real estate company El Paso and Company bought out the previous owner, John Burtis Cook. Cook renamed his company El Paso Corporation and began to develop El Cajon into one of Southern California's most important towns by sellinglectricity and water systems to local farmers. In 1912-13, Mayor Floyd Dyer erected a public works project which included an artificial beach on North Harbor Street which still stands today as one of town's attractions (the first municipally funded beach development in Southern California). This event also marked the beginning of what would become known as downtown El Cajon with its early Art Deco architecture andcommercial district along Harbor Boulevard (now Broadway). In 1916, construction began on what would eventually be known as Veterans Memorial Drive which runs through downtown El Cajon connecting it with nearby Imperial Beach Cove via long straight avenues leading to high-rise buildings such as Embassy Row and Villa Maya enclosed within gardens ringed by tall palm trees
