The first Europeans to visit what is now El Cajon were two Spanish Jesuits who set out from San Diego on November 12, 1776, during the Mexican–American War. They named the place "San Pedro" after Prince Philip's flagship at that time, which was moored at anchor off shore near modern day Harbor Beach. On November 26 of that year they return with their charts and find it had been renamed Inyokern by Captain Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna for his rancho (ranch) where Manila Bay lay immediately to the east. After a fruitless search in all directions they abandoned ship December 6th in order to winter there until springtime when they could resume their journey northward along present day US-1010W towards Monterey Bay. A post office was established at Inyokern on January 10, 1827, under the name La Mesa del Rey y el Rancho de la Encinas y el Alcalde. A store opened there February 3rd of that year by Samuel Morse with an initial stock of five cans of powder and six shot guns; this was one mile south of present day Main Street across from Old Navy Shopping Center). By September 1st 1828 there were sixty odd inhabitants; three stores conducted general merchandise such as flour, groceries and candles while others built brick buildings such as house #2 (now part of Mrs.(Ann)) Fishers Hardware Store) or #5 (now known as East side strip mall). A jail commenced operations March 5th 1830 inmates being held without charge since no judge could be found nearby to hear warrants issued against them; this building still stands today inside City Hall Annex Building adjacent to Police Department headquarters across from Macy’s department store). So great was the anger generated about these issues that Governor Dominguez called out 4000 militia led by General Mariano Castro march via mountain trails into disputed territory thereby provoking clashes between Californios & Arizonians near what are now Cameron Creek Rd./Hwy AZ 16/I-10& US 395 etc.)El Paso County Sheriff Donnie Lee announced he had ordered law enforcement personnel not participate because he saw no justification for violence! As night fell 500+ militiamen surrounded town newly arrived Arizonians throwing stones & bottles then setting fire to businesses before retreating back up canyon while ELP officers tried unsuccessfully to stop them! At sunrise next morning everything was burned down leaving only 8 people unaccounted for! total damage done $8000

The El Cajon area has been inhabited by the Kumeyaay people for over 10,000 years and was first explored by Spanish missionaries in 1769. Eliott who had fought against Mexican forces during the Mexican-American War. The City of El Cajon grew rapidly from its incorporation until the early 21st century when it experienced significant decline due to its location within commuting distance for most residents of San Diego County and other nearby municipalities. However, recent efforts by city officials to revive the city have led to positive developments that may lead to new growth opportunities in El Cajon’s future. The earliest inhabitants of what is now El Cajon were the Kumeyaay people who lived on land adjacent to present day downtown and east side streets between 1821-1827. A group of Spanish missions were established along Mission Trails 16 (Mission San Diego) and 19A (Mission Santa Fe) in 1829 which resulted in large numbers of Kumeyaay being brought over as converts to Catholicism. Settlement began near present day First Street and East Side Avenue with adobe settlements gradually expanding out into what is now downtown El Cajon following water availability issues among these earlier villages/settlements near Mission Trails 16/19A junction including SpringdaleVillage (now simply Springdale), Chula VistaVillage (now simply Chula Vista), Old TownEl Paso Village (now simply Old TownElliottville), Aguilera Villa (now simply Aguilera Valley), North Park Villages (now simply North Park), Little Elm Canyon Village (later known as Willowbrook Village) with their respective mission homes soon followed suit especially eastside avenue areas southward from Mission Trails 16 junction where there appeared less need for water access because development had proceeded more quickly elsewhere around Elliotville Rancho Adobe complex including parts now known as Hillcrest Heights, Sunrise Hills, Carlsbad Mesa Highlands etc.). With continued rapid growth throughout portions Of Southern California during this period numerous agricultural communities sprung up such as Imperial Valley near Palm Springs; ClarendONeum near Victorville; Antelope Wells off Interstate 805 north of Del Norte; Bakewell Springs off I-5 just north of Temecula; Ennis Springs off US 101 northeast of Redlands etc.) with similar names thereto still prevailing decades later even unto today despite having largely dissipated or changed demographics egressing various rural landscapes across Los Angeles & Ventura counties etc.). The city of El Cajon was founded in 1887 by George W. Norris and named for the Santa Anita race track which he had purchased in 1876. The first post office opened in 1888, and the first store was built in 1889. The City of El Cajon was incorporated on November 6, 1911. In 1925, the City of El Cajon approved a resolution to rename itself "City of Industry" after the San Francisco-based Westinghouse Electric Corporation which had donated land for the city's growth. The name change took effect on January 1, 1926.
