El Cajon is a city in San Diego County, California. The population was 127,865 at the 2010 census. El Cajon sits on the eastern edge of La Jolla Peninsula and is bordered by Imperial Beach to the north and Seal Beach to the south. It is known for its surfing beaches, golf courses, winegrowing regions, and other natural attractions. The first European settlers in what became El Cajon were Spanish missionaries who landed there in 1769. The area that would become El Cajon was first inhabited by Mission San Diego de Alcalá y Bonilla men who traded with Native Americans. In 1821, Mexico ceded California to the United States following their Mexican War victory over Mexico. With this change in possession came new land concessions from the United States which included land around present-day El Cajon as well as adjacent areas such as Carlsbad Caverns and Rancho Bernardo del Campo (now part of downtown San Diego). During World War II, El Cajon played an important role inthe war effort due to its location near Los Angeles Naval Air Station (LNAF) and naval ammunition depots. After the war ended, however, most of those jobs went away as production moved inland towards Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). As more people moved into central Southern California during the late 1960s and early 1970s development took hold in central El Cajon culminating with what is now known as “The New Central District” streetscape redevelopment project spearheaded by Mayor Dick Raymond that began in 1972 At that time it was considered one of LAFIs fastest growing neighborhoods which has seen great resurgence ever since with recent community events including art shows at Oceanside Museum of Art & Third Coast Music Hall In recent years much focus has been placed on revitalizing older portions of town while also looking into creating new districts/neighborhoods throughout town including: Lower East Side – NW corner of US 101A & I-5; North Shore – SW corner of US 101A & I-5; Downtown – NE corner between 2nd Ave N & 3rd Ave S; South Side - Southwest corner of 1st Ave N & 2nd Ave S; Heritage Corridor - NE corner between First Ave N & 3rd Ave S Elcajo’s rich history can be traced back over 350 years when it was founded by Pio Pico as a mission station called Misión de Nuestra Señora de los Dolores del Encino De la Presidencia alias “Alcalá” meaning “place belonging to Our Lady's Delight” situated on Rancho Palomar east side opposite Mendocino coast about 8 miles SSW of San Francisco Bay on property leased from adobe rancho owned by José María Altamirano located just east side ocean beach road leading down to Point Reyes National Seashore today all original buildings plus many later additions have been preserved or have been returned back into use starting with schoolhouse built 1846 see photo #2 below

It is located on a peninsula between San Diego and Orange counties and shares borders with Imperial Beach to the north and Carlsbad to the east. El Cajon was founded by Mexican immigrants in 1847 as Villa Francisca del Norte. The first post office in El Cajon opened in 1857. The community became incorporated as a city on January 1, 1916. It lost its charter and status as an independent city on February 14, 1950. The present day economy of El Cajon is based largely on agriculture; dairy products are the most important product exported from the city. More than half of all jobs held within the city limits are related to economic activity that takes place outside of El Cajon proper; these include support services for businesses in neighboring communities such as Carlsbad or Imperial Beach, manufacturing workforces associated with various types of machinery and equipment manufacturers (such as Cummins Incorporated), research and development activities for new technology companies (such as Qualcomm) or other engineering firms (like Intel), health care workers performing tasks similar to those found at clinics throughout Southern California such as Kaiser Permanente or Caremark Health Systems, civilian military members stationed at Naval Base Corry Mesa through Parris Island Hospital District 4-A - also known locally simply as " naval base" - along with personnel working for local government agencies including fire departments, libraries and social service organizations serving more rural parts of San Diego County. Today's downtown area is home to many businesses, government offices including City Hall Annex Building which houses the Mayor's Office & Management Services Department & City Council Chambers where hearings take place for zoning changes affecting business within town limits & City Manager's Office housing Police Department Headquarters which includes Command Post Recreational Vehicle Park which has been used by both US Coast Guard Squadron 26&27 from 1952 until their move from Viejas Marina until 1986 when they moved back into Bushnell Field this now part of Patrolman Plaza across street from Library before it closed because building code restrictions having no replacement plan submitted due to lack of funding prompting LEMSA Architects PC to design a brand new library/paradise garden complex including Education Center adjacent park not open yet since Jan 2014 after being approved by voters who funded it with raised money then sold bonds against future property taxes generated during renovation plus revenues generated from parking garages created next door once library opened
The town of El Cajon, California was founded in 1881 by the brothers Elias and George Bemis. The town quickly grew in population, and by 1907 it had a population of over 7,000 people. In 1912, El Cajon became an incorporated town. during the 1930s El Cajon experienced a financial crisis that led to a decrease in its population. However, during World War II the community staged a successful effort to become one of the first American communities to pledge allegiance to the United States as part of the war effort. After the war,El Cajon experienced a period of growth and prosperity which ended in 1984 when its economy fell into recession.
