Over time, the land lay fallow and the Friends started leasing it out to farmers, but they never forgot their original goal: To provide a home for the local aboriginal people. In 1932, they founded the El Cajon Historical Society in order to preserve and share El Cajon's rich cultural heritage with all who would enjoy it. The society continues to operate today as an important resource for locals and tourists alike.
El Cajon, California is a city in San Diego County, California, United States. The population was 84,161 at the 2010 census. It is part of the larger Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city's ZIP code is 82014. El Cajon was founded on December 7, 1876 by pioneers in what is now known as Old Town San Diego and was named for General Manuel Estrada y Croix. The first post office in El Cajon opened on February 14, 1877. On May 24 of that year, the first school opened in town with six students. In 1879 a railroad station was built and remains used to this day as the downtown business district lies between First Street and Railroad Avenue SE (now Harbor Drive). At this time there were only two stores and no schools or churches within town limits because most people living there made their livelihoods from farming or ranching operations such as haymaking or cattle raising. One of the earliest industrial sites in town was an old cotton gin next to the present Cotton Millenium Park which began production of oil lamps for illumination use in 1901 by Wernher von Braun using natural gas obtained from local wells located on Rancho del Mar property just east of town limits along I-5 south of park boundaries; over time other companies came and went but that initial operation remained until about 1955 when it closed down due to vandalism by young children who had access to it during overnight hours while parents slept upstairs adjacent to their bedrooms! A major development at this time took place around 1915 when a group led by Captain John Aibel purchased some land north of First Street (now SW Third Street) containing sugarcane fields dating back to 1775 which had been leased from Juan Bautista de Anza y Arroyo; they started planting sugarcane hereabouts near what would become known as "Plymouth" Roadstead later renamed after Commodore Perry’s flagship USS Constitution which docked at Newport News Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Co., Portsmouth VA during her maiden voyage in 1898...Cotton has been grown here since before Spanish times so we should not be too surprised that today’s streets bear Mexican name such as “Alameda” ( avenues), etcetera varieties thereof; after all our ancestors brought these plants over with them when theyigrated here more than 250 years ago Some have suggested that historical surnames such as Peralta might also be connected with earlyicultural activities taking place within El Cajon vicinity including horticulture although further research will doubtless provide additional insights into this subject matter! On October 15th 1916 Campanile Electric Light Company became operational providing electricity for lights throughout downtown El Cajon with streetlights beginning operation one week later on November 1st 1916 followed by light poles/poles & stringers starting up November 5th 1916... El Cajon is a town in San Diego County, California, United States. The population was 82 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the South San Diego metropolitan area. El Cajon is located on the eastern edge of San Diego and includes some of the city's most well-preserved Victorian architecture. The first Europeans to visit what is now El Cajon were Spanish missionaries who sailed upriver from Mexico in 1542 looking for a new route to open up coastal California to Protestantism. They failed to find anything more interesting than an inland swamp, so they returned home and never again ventured downstream into what is now our country. In 1846, following Mexican independence from Spain, American settlers founded Mission San Felipe de Guadalupe in what is now El Cajon Canyon on land that had been part of Baja California since before the days of Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo and Sebastián Vizcaino. The mission was abandoned in 1849 because it was too difficult to maintain with only 12 men and six women living there during what was then still a time when transportation between missions and nearby towns was by horseback or vehicle only. So began one of America's longest drawn out wars with Mexico – over control of this tiny corner of Alta California – which ended just three years later when Antonio López de Santa Anna (whose forces had all but destroyed BajaCalifornia) ceded it back to Mexico following his successful siege at Buena Vista Heights outside present-day San Diego. In 1853, Stanyan vied unsuccessfully with Commodore John D’Arcy Perry for possession of Rancho Rinconada near present day Miramar; finally Los Angeles took over ranchos east of Del Mar Beach in 1858 after war canoe navigation became much easier due to development along both coasts by Anglo entrepreneurs led by James Kenedy Sr.. This period also saw increased immigration courtesy ofrailroad developers who wanted access to cheap labor for their projects such as Canoga Park onetime pueblo that would soon become Beverly Hills; Industry which included Shiprock off Interstate 5 between La Jolla and Point Loma; El Cajon Naval Air Station adjacent naval base housing Consolidated V-22 Osprey Aircraft Carrier Strike Fighter Squadron One Hundred Fifty-Six (CVN–157), once USS Enterprise CVN-65 carriers); numerous agricultural endeavors including Pismo Beach past Modoc Creek where early citrus groves were established; military installations like Camp Pendleton Marine Barracks built adjacent Presidio Light Infantry Post #2 while Fort Sill Army Ammunition Plant lies two miles east across Otay Mesa Creek; Frontier Oil Field operations at Refinery No 2 oil field northeast today’s Encinitas coastline while Arroyito Dam remains operational providing water storage capacity for Selma Valley farmers irrigating their crops near modern day Escondido Village…. El Cajon experienced rapid growth during its post World War II heyday thanks largely to its status asenterprise center for defense contracting within Southern California Edison Company (SCE). wartime GI housing shortages caused many locals - particularly males -to enter professional careers in government service or business management through Desilu Corporation subsidiaries such as Western Electric Telephone Company (WETCO), Lockheed Martin Missile Corporation (LMTD) and Hughes Aircraft company responsible for major defense contracts throughout the war effort including designing bombers/fighters/missiles needed for Operation Crossroads air assault against Japanese targets deep inside Japan…… . postwar era brought increased crime rates with high unemployment rates prompting businesses owners like SCE officials Tom Dooley and Lorenzo Hernandez Jr., president pro tempore Don Edwards Sr., vice president Hedda Hopper “Honeymooner” Jensen Coleman daughters Bonnie & Barbara Heckerling Collins siblings Donny & Cindy Shanahan brothers Bobbye & Bobby Schultz spouses Nancie Gomez children Avgina Ramos grandchildren…The community generally enjoyed good economic times until recent events triggered various problems: decreasing production at local businesses combined with increasing competition from larger cities….. After several years without any significant progress being made regarding solving these issues, voters passed an initiative which gave voice to concerns about heavy traffic congestion on I-5 northbound leading into downtown during peak hours throughout the morning rush hour…… .the City Manager met with representatives from SCE in late 2013 proposing that instead create a bike lanes along I-5 corridor creating less delays for commuters.......
