It is located on the eastern edge of San Diego and bordered by Imperial County to the north and east, and Orange County to the south. The port of El Cajon handled over 20 million metric tons of cargo in 2009. The first Europeans to visit what is now El Cajon were Spanish adventurers working for Spain in 1821 when they sailed up what is now PCH (Paso del Cabrillo Highway). They named their discovery "San Diego" after San Francisco Bay where they had landed before sailing back down river. On July 24, 1824, American Commodore James Kenedy explored this region from Point Loma on October 15 - he called it Gadsden Land afterGeneral Manuel José de Gadsden who had led an expedition against Mexico in 1819-20. Captain Dominguez chartered two ships, San Miguel and Santa Rosa with 146 men under Captain José Gomez for exploring this coast as far north as latitude 34 degrees 37 minutes longitude or about modern day Baja California Peninsula. A smallpox epidemic that season killed many seamen whether journeying inland or off shore so Gomez put ashore his men at an uninhabited island near present day North Harbor in Laguna Beach then started his return journey October 9th but died of smallpox on October 16th while disembarking at Los Angeles Creek some miles west of today's downtown El Cajon. Lt Governor Félix Peña ordered Major Gabriel Moraga to take possession & name the place Rancho del Buenaventura which later became part of US Naval Station West Coaster Base Camp Valley Park area
