It should be noted that many marines stationed here come from families living nearby so having something personal or sentimental is often seen as important by these soldiers/ civilians interacting with them on a daily basis.

El Cajon is a city in San Diego County, California, located on the Pacific Coast. As of the 2010 United States Census, it had a population of 124,733. The El Cajon Naval and Air Station is located within the city limits. The early history of El Cajon can be traced back to 1847 when Mexican settlers Captain José María Guerrero and his family arrived in what is now El Cajon from Mission Viejo. They opened a small store and post office called "Gonzalo's Rancho" (now part of City Park) on what is now Second Street. At that time there were no streets or buildings within the limits of present-day El Cajon. The town was platted in 1851 by George Waring and named after Commodore John Fitch's ship "Caledonia", which had been sunk off southern California during the Mexican–American War at Baja California Peninsula. The first school was built in 1852 by Simeón Baca as an academy for boys under 8 years old; it closed in 1865 because of low enrollment. A second school was built in 1857 by William Dobbins and became known as "Dodds' Academy". It closed in 1860 due to low enrollment also. In 1862, Pio Pico Chavez purchased land southeast of present-day downtown El Cajon from Juan Bautista Carpinteria for $2 per acre ($31/acre). Chavez Calles High School began instruction in 1863; it closed in 1966 due to lack of students and funding opportunitiesemeant only that year for its building to be used as a fire station before being razed completely two years later because arson could not be ruled out as a cause. In 1868 Chaves opened up another grocery store at Fifth Avenue and First Street with general merchandise including books and hardware; this store continued into the 1970s but finally closing down around 1980 having outgrown its space footprint ever since despite protests from some citizens who felt that such large stores should have been localized instead across several blocks near public transportation stops like Seventh Avenue BART Station primarily serving southside neighborhoods northwest of downtown where commercial development has taken place over those decades despite little or no urban blight results other than some increased traffic congestion near BART stations which have eased somewhat with new development adjacent to BART stations although still affecting nearby residential areas quite significantly.) A post office was established at El Cajon on July 24, 1861, by order of President Abraham Lincoln pursuant to Act 1056 (27 U.S., 3 Pet.) El Cajon is a city in San Diego County, California. The population was 116,869 at the 2010 census. It is the fifth-most populous city in San Diego County and the most populous city of Orange County. It lies on Randall's Island, between Mission Bay and North Beach on the Pacific Ocean. The City of El Cajon was incorporated on January 1, 1892 by residents of Isla Vista and Mission Bay who petitioned for incorporation because they felt they were ignored by their larger neighbor, San Diego. The name "Cajon" is Spanish for "island." The first permanent settler in what became El Cajon was José Gomez de la Garza who built a small adobe cabin on land he acquired from Rancho Santa Margarita Mexican landowner Manuel Nieto in 1887. In 1902, City voters passed an ordinance changing the name to El Cajon after Capt. George Wainwright's shipwreck off Point Loma which had happened only weeks earlier while returning from a cruise to Honolulu through that port town. Captain Wainwright had been lost overboard with his flagship HMS “Tritonal” when she ran aground off Loma about 26 miles south of where El Cajon now stands; his crew were saved but all his effects including his charts, tools and clothing were lost forever with no chance of finding them again until 1958 when permission was granted by then-Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to drill for oil under Loma Point National Monument adjacent to shoreline now within City limits The first post office opened at Siesta Key near present day North Park on December 12, 1903; it closed October 15th due to high volumes of mail caused by local industry concerns about potential seismic activity around nearby faults.-On November 26th 1910 representatives from various business interests gathered at the old Imperial Hotel (now called Don Benito's) located across Harbor Drive from today's Convention Center for what would come to be known as "The Meeting Of The Business Men Of America", In attendance were Mayor Harry Folsom (of Hawthorne), Philip Augustus Norris (of Los Angeles), Edward Haughton (of Sacramento) Averell Harriman (of New York), James Woodburne Whitehead (of Boston) and others representing areas such as citrus fruit packinghouses/processing plants/, real estate interests etc., resulting in passage of an ordinance authorizing development along Railroad Street between Harbor Drive and Westshore Boulevard
