The California National Guard was founded in 1849 and has served the state of California ever since. In 1916, the National Guard's 1st Battalion, 41st Infantry Regiment was re-organized as the El Cajon National Guard. The unit is now known as the 141st Infantry Regiment.

It was founded in 1887 by two American businessmen, Julius Rosenwald and Amos Kendall, as a seaside resort on the Orange River. The town became an agricultural center during the early 20th century; its main industry was agriculture but also produced hay, straw and other products for local consumption. The area around El Cajon became known for its surfing waves during World War II; Los Angeles residents used El Cajon as their base while they prepared to fight in Europe. After the war ended, El Cajon experienced a commercial boom that led to increased traffic and development. The current downtown core was built in the late 1960s when developers bought land adjacent to the beach and started building high-rise hotels and offices. The town has seen steady growth since then, with hordes of new people moving here every decade or so – most recently due to Latino migration from Central America which has created a large population of Hispanics (and some Native Americans) living near the beachfront businesses and schools. Most of these newcomers are low-income renters who struggle to keep up with city-wide prices for basic goods like groceries or rent; however, many bands maintain studios or live concerts at nearby venues while keeping their music downplayed or nonexistent outside of El Cajon's tiny community atmosphere

The city of El Cajon, California was founded in 1853 by members of the Mission San Diego de Alcalá Society. The town had a population of just over 100 people when it was platted in 1855. It grew rapidly after being named for General José Joaquín El Cajon, who got his nickname "El Cajon" because he led a cavalry charge against an Apache band on July 4, 1847. The region around present-day El Cajon was part of Rancho Santa Anita, which was granted to Felipe De Anza in 1785. In 1851 the United States acquired the Rancho Santa Anita and developed it as the town of El Cajon. The first post office in El Cajon opened on December 12, 1856. The name changed to El Cajon in 1870 due to objections from other towns that were growing up around San Diego County (then called Yuma County). The first mayor of El Cajon was Lorenzo J. Hidalgo Sr., who served from 1861 until 1865. In 1916 the city adopted an ordinance making it an open election district without voting booths; this change made it easier for residents to get involved in their local government. During World War II, many American soldiers camps were located near or within reach of EL CAJON during 1942-1945; these included Camp Kearny (later renamed North Island), Camp Pendleton and Camp Lewis (later renamed Fort Monmouth). After the war ended most military installations closed down but some continued operation such as Naval Station Corregidor and Naval Air Station Miramar which remain active today as naval stations providing air support for Marines and Navy vessels
El Cajon is a city in San Diego County, California, United States. The population was 66,341 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of San Diego and is part of the San Diego metropolitan area. The first European to explore what is now El Cajon was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo in 1542. When he explored this area he named it "Nimitz" after his discovery of a anchorage near present-day Naval Base Imperial Beach on December 10, 1542. The name "Nimitz" likely originated from Native American word meaning "big head." In 1821, Pedro Fortunato Menéndez Grant founded Rancho Santa Fe de las Pulgas (later renamed Rancho el Cajon), which became one of the largest and most successful land grants in California history. He also built what is now known as Point Loma lighthouse in 1827 as part of his estate holdings adjacent to Point Loma National Monument. A small town named El Cajon developed around Brushy Creek until 1861 when it was annexed by San Diego and became part of the city limits; however, businesses continued to be established there until 1915 when El Cajon incorporated as a municipality under current City Hall jurisdiction with its own ordinances and government services effective that year. At that time there were only three streets: First Street (now Broadway), Second Street (now Mesa Road), and Third Street; all other streets were unpaved dirt lanes leading to Cases Municipal Park which would later become Playland Park Preserve (located within today's Old TownEl Cajon).In 1916 an act passed by the City Council designated Playland Park Preserve as an experimental accordion park for children with no parental permission or notification being given for over 50 years! Elected officials at that time included Deputy Mayor John Gorman who served from 1916-1917; Mayoral Candidate Jno Pritchard who won but lost office due to term limitation; Harry Ahern who served from 1917-1920; Alderman James Sweeny who served 1920-1924; Jessamine Kappenberger who served 1924-1928; Frank Tingey Sr.; Frank Tingey Jr.; Jack Vogelbergwho served 1928-1932;; Angelo Saviowho served 1932-1945;; Fredric Werdegar 1945-. By order dated 7/10/1945 actions were taken pursuant thereto including annexation into CITY OF SAN DIEGO resulting in establishment of PRESERVATION DISTRICT NUMBER 5JONESVILLE PARK AREA
