The ship was commissioned into the United States Navy as part of the Spanish-American War effort. On April 12, 1899, during a visit to San Diego, Commodore John D. Stockton met with Admiral George Dewey and discussed defensive measures for Los Angeles Harbor. As a result of this meeting, Commodore Stockton ordered the USS Constitution to carry a gift for Admiral Dewey from Mexico City: 24 cannons and ammunition. On November 26, 1901, USS Maine (BB-43) took possession of USS Constitution at Long Beach Naval Shipyard after she was decommissioned from the navy. Constitution was then transferred to Marine Corps custody at Camp Pendleton and put into storage at that location until October 10th when she was delivered to El Cajon Naval Shipyard where she became BB-43. She then served as flagship of First Marine Division in World War I before being decommissioned on September 15th 1919 and sold for scrap on November 20th 1924. USS Constitution Museum began operations in 1984 in El Cajon when Congress established the US National Military museum through Public Law 98-586 which provided funding for the establishment of such an institution within any local government unit in America west of the Mississippi River “to promote national unity and protect American democracy” In 1996 it relocated to Washington D.C.. In 2002 it reopened its doors to visitors at 1601 First Street NW Suite 1100 Washington D.C., just steps from Independence Hall Plaza across Pennsylvania Avenue from The White House . El Cajon is a small town in San Diego County, California. It is located on the eastern edge of the city of San Diego and it shares borders with Carlsbad to the north, East Carlsbad to the east, La Jolla to the south, and El Cajon Highlands to the west. The population was 41,826 at the 2010 census. The first traders in what is now El Cajon arrived during Spanish colonization of Mexico in 1821. They named their new community after Juan José Cárdenas Santa Anna y Costilla who had been governor of Michoacán at that time. The town was platted in 1835 by John Sutter as part of his Rancho San Marcos land grant which he also purchased from Mission Santa Fe. In 1855, when a group of Mormon settlers came to Suvaca Valley in southern San Diego County and founded Salt Lake City on Promontory Point about 12 miles (19 km) northeast of present-day El Cajon, they began building mills here for flour and other purposes. At that time there were only six residents living in El Cajon proper: four families who cultivated local crops such as barley and wheat; one storekeeper; one physician; one domestic servant; and two ferrymen operating between Suvaca Valley and Carlsbad. By 1860 there were over 100 people living in El Cajon proper with nearly all working within its limits or surrounding communities. During World War II, many members of the American military served here including generals George Marshall (USA), Admiral Chester Nimitz (USA), Lieutenant General Leslie R Bruce (USA), Major General Edward Maitland Smith (Canada), Colonel Halsey Thomas (USA) among others. Hispanic or Latino residents make up 21% of the total population but are only 8% literate. El Cajon's economy has been based largely on agriculture since at least the late 19th century; however, industry has also become increasingly important over time including manufacturing (especially from 1951 to 1976), real estate development (including subdivisions along Interstate 5), logistics services such as trucking and storage facilities for food companies (until 2007 mainly Albertsons), health care ( Kaiser Permanente) and other services such as legal representation for small businesses owners throughout central San Diego County. El Cajon is a city in San Diego County, California, United States. The population was 54,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the larger San Diego metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in El Cajon were Spanish soldiers who arrived on July 24, 1795 during the Mexican-American War and named it Villa de los Padres (Villa of the Padres). They built a small adobe mission and left behind three pigeons as symbols of their faith. In 1821, Mexico ceded California to the United States after winning war with Spain. The U.S. government designated El Cajon as part of what was then known as Mission Valley because it had been one of only two places in Alta California under American jurisdiction without Indian help or assistance from Mexico City. The other place was Santa Fe. In 1824, when Mission San Fernando Rey became an Anglo-Catholic parish and services were conducted in English instead of Mexican Spanish, El Cajon's name reverted to Villa de los Padres and its original mission buildings remain today (the ruins are located at 6252 Sprague Avenue). The town began expanding rapidly due to mining operations that began around 1869; by 1880 there were over 1,000 people living here including 300 miners employed by Republic Mining Company Ltd., which also included a millrace that supplied water for irrigation purposes near present day Escondido Hills Boulevard and Lemon Street. However, althoughmining continued until about 1902 when production petered out due to depletion of resources followed by factors such as droughts and increased competition from other industries;elite families such as those associated with Republic Mining Company Limited continued to operate powerful mills until well into World War II draining huge tracts of agricultural land just outside present day downtown El Cajon proper where they constructed expensive villas complete with gardens and poolside residences designed by architects like Frank Lloyd Wright heirs now long gone but still visible from Interstate 5 Buckley Middle School down Lemon Street past Escondido Hills Boulevard up Lemon Street pastpresent day Hillcrest Drive all the way back to US 101 again until these days there is very little evidence remaining above ground level since many years ago this area was heavilyforested so much so that even recent construction projects have not disturbed any significant parts below ground A large portion – if not all –of what is left today comes from early 20th century demolition efforts led by civic boosters group Save Our Mills who successfully lobbied county officials unsuccessfully for more than 20 years before finally achieving victory through eminent domain proceedings in 1978 A large amount also came form previous excavations which took place between 1906-1910 uncovering thousands artifacts including pottery sherds dating back to 9th century BC
