El Cajon is a small, unincorporated community in San Diego County, California, United States. It lies on the eastern edge of Mission Bay and is located near El Cajon Airport. The name derives from the Spanish word for "the bay." As of the 2010 census, its population was 552 people. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now El Cajon were members of the Franciscan missionary order, who founded missions in 1821 and 1824 at present-day Carlsbad and Oceanside. In 1847, land was purchased by J. D. Stephens from Juan Bautista Alvarado for $1 million (). The town site was laid out by Stephens on November 17, 1848 (), with James Payson as surveyor (). A post office called El Cajon was established in 1865 (); it changed its name to San Diego in 1888. A railroad station was built here in 1922 (), but it closed down two years later due to budget constraints. In 1951, a group of businessmen led by banker George Foster bought 8% of the Union Pacific Railroad for $2 million (). They renamed it Foster Enterprises Inc., which continued to operate the rail line until 1993 when it merged with Amtrak. The town site became part of Imperial Beach after that city's incorporation; however, there has been no general assembly since 1949 because Imperial Beach never ratified an ordinance providing one.
