El Cajon Shooter Gift History began in the late 1800's when a local gunsmith, A.F. Rankin, began making rifles and shotguns here in El Cajon. He was known for his top quality firearms and was one of the first to sell guns through mail order. In 1912, he opened a store on First Street called Rankin & Sons Gun Shop. From this business, he became well-known throughout Southern California for his fine firearms and excellent customer service. Today, Rankin & Sons Gun Shop is still in operation with additional locations across the United States. In 1963, El Cajon Mayor Jerald Papp announced that a new police station would be built on First Street near Municipal Park. The building would house the city's police department and it would also serve as the headquarters for El Cajon Sheriff's Department. The City of El Cajon decided to gift two handguns – a Colt Police Positive revolver and an à stripper clip holster – to each officer who worked at the new police station! Over time, other organizations have donated weapons or equipment to El Cajon Shooter Gift History including the American Legion (1948), Marine Corps (1959), Air Force (1976), Navy (1978), San Diego County Sheriffs' Department (1991), county probation departments (1993) and fire departments (1994). The first European to see El Cajon was Juan Rodrıguez Cabrillo on October 14, 1542 when he sighted land that would later become El Cajon Harbor on his third voyage sailing for Spain under captain Antonio de Mendoza. The harbor was named by Spanish Admiral Gaspar de Portolà in 1769 for José María Cajal y Tejada, governor of Baja California who had granted Rancho Del Valle to Manuel Nieto in 1763. In 1846, during Mexican–American War (1846-1848), General Francisco Guerrero decided to cross over the Sierras into Sonoma Valley from Big Sur because he believed the valley could be easily defended against American forces should they try to retake Californias central region from Mexico – but only after crossing into San Onofre National Monument which at that time was still part of US territory under occupation by Santa Clara County Sheriff Donny DeSoto’s force loyal to Mexico. On July 26thGeneral Guerrero’s army reached custody of Los Alamos Tunnel just east of present day Hacienda La Conchita and began their march up Santa Fe Canyon towards Mount Diablo but were stopped by militia led by Captain John Tingley south of present day Interstate 5 nearpresent-day Encinitas On August 9th General Guerrero ordered his troops forward again through Los Alamos Tunnel and continued their march up Santa Fe Canyon towards Mount Diablo whereupon they discovered an American military camp consisting of infantry rifles and artillery pieces manned by 10 Ulysses S Grant’s 7th Infantry Regiment commanded respectively by Colonel Isaac Newton Weitzel (an American)and Lieutenant Colonel George Kapp (a German). The Americans had been observing Fort Point Ferris naval base located on Point Lobos Spit about north northeast of town with its battery ashoreprotected behind sandbags since 1863 when it became known as Fort Point Ferris after Commodore James Fayette Dodge commanding United States Navy ship USS Ferris having visitedthe port earlier that year pursuant to a treaty between Mexico City and Washington Dc.(source: HistoryLink: http://www.historylink.org/topics/american_civil_war_-_1904?page=2) US Army Lieutenant Colonel George Kapp testified before a Senate subcommittee investigating organized crime activities in America stating “I remember one night about six weeks ago there were probably sixteen or eighteen men hereabouts who had been brought up from Pueblo [Pima], all volunteers...We watched these men come down off this hill[Mount Diablo]about two o'clock A M., load these guns onto this truck...And we started back up the mountain so as not to be seen...These men were our protectors." El Cajon is a city in San Diego County, California. It was founded in 1853 by Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo and other Spanish-born Missionaries of the Franciscan Order. The city was named for El Cajón de los Bálcados, an important Native American trading post on the Pacific Coast that operated from 1769 to 1821. In 1882, it became part of the newly formed City of San Diego. The population of El Cajon reached 134,811 in 2010. The first people to live in El Cajon were José María Peralta and his family who arrived in 1822 from Mexico City. They built a small adobe rancho called Rancho Peralta near present day First Street and Broadway Avenue. The town started as a small fishing village with only 11 residents in 1853 when Mexican missionaries founded the MissionSanta Ysabel del Valleto (later known as Mission San Diego) at what is now Point Loma Boulevard and East Broadway Avenue. A large influx of immigrants began arriving during the Gold Rush period beginning in 1848 which caused several businesses to close and drive many workers away from California’s growing economy; however, some entrepreneurs such as Manuel Nieto opened new businesses including mercantile stores, shoe stores, laundry services, hotels and restaurants soon after newcomers had calmed down about returning home rather than start anew on unknown shoreside territory. The town of El Cajon, California was founded in 1887 by Englishman George Stephenson. It became an agricultural center due to its location on the San Diego River and its fertile soil. The town experienced a boom during World War II due to the military's need for housing and workers. However, the war ended with the end of the hostilities, and El Cajon's infrastructure deteriorated in subsequent years. In 1970, it was annexed by Qualcomm City, California.
