In 1996, they relocated to their current location on First Street SE where they continue to serve up delicious cupcakes, bagels, muffins, doughnuts, cookies etcetera under the name “The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf” today! In 1938 El Cajon annexed Rancho Viejo which included present day Del Mar Heights In 1941 beach land south of Interstate 5 along with Goffs Mesa were added to city boundaries forming an area now bounded by Harbor Drive (west), Water Avenues (southwest), I-5 (northwest), andDel Mar Heights Road/Pendleton Boulevard (east). A post office called Rancho del Presidio was established in 1847, and the city was incorporated on February 14, 1854. The Kumeyaay people lived here for more than 10,000 years before they were forcibly removed in 1846 by Mexican soldiers under General Antonio López de Santa Anna as part of the Mexican-American War. After their removal, many of these people moved to present-day Baja California and eventually founded La Jolla and other communities there. In 1906–1907 developer Alfred P. Sloan built his first Aeronautical Engineering School (later renamed NASA Headquarters) on a piece of land he had purchased near what is now Mesa Verde National Park. In 1957 he donated 1/4 acre (0.18 km2) of property at what is now North Harbor Drive to become El Cajon Naval Air Station; it remains one of NAS El Cajon's primary functions today. The airport also served as home to NAS Point Reyes during World War II until its closure due to enemy fire damage in 1945. Amarillo Oil Field Railroad opened up El Cajon in 1912 with plans to develop it into an oil town but abandoned those plans after only a few months when production averaged only 2 barrels per day compared with state-of-the art oilspots being developed elsewhere at that time. However local residents supported the railroad because they saw it as an opportunity to improve their quality of life by getting jobs outside their homes; Amarillo Oil Field Railroad closed down in 1917 without ever developing the town it claimed would be located thereabouts Later developers built large shopping malls and professional offices around Navy Air Station - making much use of its excellent access to freeways - but none came close to replicating navy aviation or its associated culture which has helped make El Cajon one of Southern California's most popular tourist destinations since World War II
The first Europeans to set foot in El Cajon were the Jesuit Father Francisco J. Pacheco and his companions, who landed on December 12, 1769. They named their settlement San Diego after Saint Diego, Patron of El Cajon. The Spanish Empire claimed California in 1821 as part of Mexico's Alta California province. The Mexican government moved the capital of Alta California from Monterey to Sacramento in 1827, and the Presidio of San Diego was founded on February 14, 1829 by President José Joaquín de Herrera as a military stronghold to protect Californios from non-Mexican influences. The Presidio passed into U.S. hands when Mexico ceded it to America in 1848 during the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The state of California was created on November 16, 1850 when American settlers arrived at what is now known as El Cajon Village near where Pacheco landed. In 1862, following the Mexican-American War, General Antonio López de Santa Anna ordered American forces occupying Baja California under cover of darkness to burn down all buildings not belonging to Mexican troops and civilian residents they encountered while raiding villages near La Portezuela Peninsula. This campaign left extensive destruction behind including churches and homes along with crops and animals that were lost or seized by Americansraiders seeking plunder rather than tribute paid for access to Baja Californian land since Mexico had ceded it without any representation from its people 2
