The El Centro Air Force Deployed Gift History Museum is a nonprofit organization that honors the history of the El Centro Air Force. The museum was founded in 1990 and annually collects, preserves and displays original military documents, insignia and memorabilia from the El Centro Air Force. The museum has an extensive collection of air force gifts from throughout the years. Some of our most famous items include a Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker refueling tanker donated by Texas A&M University in 1998 and an F-104 Starfighter donated by the California Air National Guard in 2002. We also have a variety of other military artifacts, such as uniforms, weaponry and equipment used by members of the El Centro Air Force. Our collection is both unique and popular with visitors who come to learn about the city’s role in World War II, Korea or today’s conflicts around the world.

The USAF provides strategic bombers such as the Boeing 747 Dreamliner, Lockheed Martin F-16 Fighting Falcon, and Northrop Grumman E-6B Prowler; fighters such as the McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle and Boeing 737 Max; maritime patrol aircraft such as the MH-60S Sea Hawk and Lockheed Martin P-3 Orion; and reconnaissance assets including the Bell Helicopter RC-135A Stratofreighter and imagery collection platforms such as the Humvee HC-130J Hercules. The El Centro Air Force Station received its first gift in 1942 from the United StatesAAF. The AAF donated a Consolidated B-24 Liberator, serial number 528-609, to the station. This airplane was used as part of the military's "Flying Fortress" program, which aimed to develop an aircraft that could defend against air attack. In 1945, the AAF gifted another Consolidated B-24 Liberator, serial number 528-611, to the station. This airplane was used as part of the USAAF's "Target Practice" program and was also used for training El Centro residents in how to shoot targets with firearms. In 1951, the AAF gifted a Boeing 707 airliner (serial number 727-211) to the station. This plane was used as part of Operation Neptune's Spear and helped transport troops and supplies into Thailand during World War II. The AAF donated a McDonnell Douglas DC-9 cargo jetliner (serial number 971-236) to El Centro Air Force Station on October 25th, 1991. This jetliner was used as one of two jets stationed at el centro for Operation Desert Storm.

The El Centro area has been inhabited by Native Americans for more than 10,000 years. In 1821 an American party led by Captain John C. Fremont arrived here and founded the first Mormon Mission called Arroyo Seco. After Mexican independence from Spain was gained in 1848, El Centro became part of Mexico until it was ceded to the United States in 1920 as a result of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. As a result of its role as both capital of California and seat of government for all San Luis Obispo County until 1959, El Centro played an important role in Californian history and culture. In 1907 Samuel Morse donated land to create what would become el centro park which still includes sections of his old home today. The city also erected a large granite monument dedicated to him in 1928 which can be seen on Park Boulevard between First Street and Second Street east of downtown

It became an important station on the San Francisco-Oakland Railway and was known for its food and wine. In 1868, the town was renamed California City after Governor Pio Pico recommended it be named after California's capital, Sacramento. The city boundaries changed many times over the years but El Centro remained its primary urban center until the early 20th century when it declined in importance and eventually vanished from official records.
