The first people to live in El Centro were Native Americans who hunted and gathered food near present-day downtown El Centro. In 1827, José Garza founded what became known as Garza's Mills which processed cotton and other goods for local farmers. In 1851, Captain James Folsom founded what is now called Folsom & Company mercantile store on Second Street in downtown El Centro. This was a huge success and helped turn El Centro into a major center for trade within Humboldt County. By 1870, over 100 businesses had been established in downtown ElCentro! During World War II, many civilians were killed by Japanese forces during skirmishes along the Southern Oregon border because they believed that these areas would be available as concentration camps if war broke out there between America and Japan. However, this never happened; instead Japanese military personnel withdrew westward after surrendering their weapons on September 2nd 1945 without leaving any civilian populations behind (the only exception being community leaders such as Mayor Harry Sink).
