El Centro, California is a city in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 44,854 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of San Bernardino County. The name "El Centro" comes from the Mexican word "el centro", meaning "the center". The first permanent settlement in what is now El Centro was made on November 14, 1847 when American settlers arrived via Stagecoach route 66 from Santa Fe. A post office called Centerville was established in 1853, and remained open until 1893. In 1856, three brothers founded the Central Valley Railroad to transport goods and passengers between Los Angeles and Yuma; this original town later became part of El Centro. In 1870, two more brothers founded a town named Webb City on land that had been donated by José Ayerbe de la Cruz y Cámpora. This new community soon grew into a prosperous agricultural society with a school and cotton gin. On October 9th of that year, John Sutter discovered gold near Mineral Beach and decided to set up shop nearby; he named his new settlement after him, Sutterville (later renamed Sutter Creek). After finding some additional gold nuggets during his exploration efforts in 1886-87%, Witkin & Hutton leased 200 acres (80 ha) of Rancho Rinconadas (now part of downtown El Centro) to prospectors for $5 an hour in 1888; this early mining activity continued until 1902 when all but one claim was exhausted. In 1896 the first electric lights were installed in El Centro when George Westinghouse wired down wires from Cottonwood Springs to provide power for streetlights throughout downtown; this event marked one of the earliest steps forward for modern day urban life in Northern California. During Prohibition era (1920-1933), many businesses closed their doors due to prohibition laws - including several hotel/motels which still stand today within walking distance of each other across Main Street - but most locals refused to comply with these restrictive measures as it damaged their economy and lifestyles no matter how difficult it may have been politically or socially speaking given their social class background etc.; however some did capitulate such as Joesphine Botta who managed her father's grocery store before eventually opening her own restaurant inside what is now The Pecos Building located just east of Main Street/northwest corner Third Avenue where she still operates today under her current name - Joe's Pizza Place - although allegiances have changed over time since then having shifted towards Democrat Party politics since Governor Jerry Brown has been Mayor since 2014 . A local landmark dating back to 1880s can be found at 2146 N First St., also known as Villa Blanca Mansion which served as both home base for soldiers during World War II while they were stationed here stationed at Camp Roberts adjacent thereto prior thereto and also used by Govt.'s Deptartment officials during hostage negotiations hereinafter following 1945 siege etc... currently functions as Historic District Museum playing host annually July 4th weekend each year hosting thousands upon thousands visitors daily... thus providing another layer of cultural diversity thru visitor appreciation not only nationally but internationally too!
