The Coast Guard was first organized in 1892. The first detachment of the Coast Guard was stationed at Point Loma, California. In 1915, the Coast Guard Station at El Centro was established and it served as the Headquarters for all units of the Coast Guard throughout California. In 1933, the name of the station was changed to El Centro Sector and it continued serving as Headquarters until 1959 when it was moved to San Diego. After 1959, Headquarters operated out of a facility located onformer Naval Aircraft hangar #2 located on Harbor Drive in downtown San Diego. From 1966-1972, Headquarters relocated to an annex located on Harbor Drive in Encinitas which served as their Command Center until they moved back to their original location on Harbour Drive in 1984. From 1984-1991 Headquarters operated out of an annex located at 5th Avenue and East Mesa Boulevard in Vista. In 1991 they moved back to their original location on Harbour Drive and continue operating from that location today. Today, part of the courthouse complex serves as headquarters for the Mexican Federal Judicial Services Commission (CJEP). During World War II, El Centro played an important role as a military airfield servicing area for United States forces operating throughout southern Baja California; during 1942–1943 it also served as Headquarters for Ustensilienamt 9b—the German propaganda branch within Nazi Germany's Office der Propaganda und Kriegsführung (OKW)—and operated under various other names including Heidelberg Airfield No 7a/b; Rabaul Airfield No 3; Arroyo Seco Airport No 10a/b; and Tiburon Airfield No 2.—Today it remains primarily known as Municipal Airport #2.—The airport has been renamed Municipal Airport #1 following a court ruling effective July 1st, 2009 which designated it as such after years of government neglect.—IATA: ELCX when ICAO: ELCTR
