El Centro was founded in 1875 by Elihu Root and his wife, Nanny Wood. The town was originally named "Napa," after the Napa Valley where they lived. After a few years, they decided to change it to "El Centro" because of its location on the central coast of California. The first settlers in El Centro were farmers and their families. They started farming around 1800 and soon began trading goods with other parts of California. In 1851, the Mexican government granted them land east of San Francisco for cattle ranching. As more people moved into El Centro, the commercial center grew quickly. In 1903, Mayor Manuel Otero authorized the construction of a municipal building which would house city hall and other public buildings. This building is now called the Municipal Building Museum. A series of fires destroyed most of downtown in 1906 but not before pressuring City Manager John Ahern to get money from developers to rebuild instead of just repairing existing structures. The rebuilding project was completed in 1908-09 at a cost of $1 million dollars including funds from state oilmen who leased part of downtown from City Hall for use as an oil refinery
