El Centro was founded in 1850 as the first town in Californias Imperial Valley. The area now includes parts of Fresno and El Centro counties, and is home to a diverse population of Native Americans, Mexicans, Anglo-Americans, and people of other nationalities. In 1871, the city's first water system was built. By 1888, El Centro had become one of the most important commercial centers in California due to its location at the junction of two major west-coast routes—the Central Pacific Railroad and the Santa Fe Railway. From 1900 to 1920, El Centro experienced an influx of European immigrants who worked in agriculture or merchant shipping. During World War II, El Centro served as a munitions production center for both Los Angeles County and San Diego County. Afterward, it became a focus for social services and housing development until it declined relative to other large California cities during the 1970s and 1980s. In recent years, however, growth in El Centro has resumed with new businesses opening up along main streets such as Main Street and Broadway. El Centro is a city in Southern California. It was incorporated on December 12, 1911, and is the second-largest city in Los Angeles County after Los Angeles. The population of El Centro was 226,846 as of the 2010 census. The downtown area has been designated a National Historic Landmark. The first Spanish settlers who arrived in Alta California were Franciscans from San Francisco and Mission San Gabriel Arcángel on October 31, 1769. They named their new place La Paz because they found it difficult to find an exact location for their mission due to the rugged terrain. When Mexicanos discovered this location on November 16, 1779, they renamed it "El Paso" after Captain José de la Cruz y Costilla's Adobe at that time located about four miles east of today's town center. In 1847 there were only 10 men living in what is now El Centro when Rancho Santa Anita was granted by Mexico to John Sutter and his men following their victory over Mexican forces at Buena Vista Creek on January 6, 1846. After years of hard work by these early pioneers including Captains Manuel Nieto and José María Castro, the Rancho Santa Anita became one of the largest land grants in California history with a total area of 388 square miles (1,200 km²). The first post office opened in El Centro on July 1st, 1872 until it closed on December 12th due to lack of mail service between Los Angeles and central Mexico City during that period! This was not simply a lack of mail service; it was also because one day while traveling down Memory Lane (now Donner Pass), General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna stopped off at Camp Kearny near present-day Northglenn where he ordered all civilian passengers off his army wagon for being too friendly with United States troops stationed there! This event led directly to establishment of El Paso as the first major town within Californias newly acquired territory! It wasn't until much later that mail began arriving regularly from Mexico City so that residents could purchase goods needed for their subsistence such as flour for bread baking or salt for seasoning - necessary items back then before Mexicans had access to western markets! The city has since been struggling with economic problems and is one of the most impoverished cities in California. However, there are some efforts being made to improve things such as new development, additional education opportunities for residents, and stronger community outreach programs.
