El Centro, California is a city located in Southern California on the border of Orange County and Riverside County. The population was 508,653 as of the 2010 census. El Centro is one of the most ethnically diverse cities in America and has been home to many Latinos since it was founded by Spanish settlers in 1777. This event marked the beginning of an era known as "the war for control over Mexico." El Centro is a city in the southern region of California, United States. The population was 174,191 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Bernardino County seat. The first permanent settlement in what would become El Centro was made on July 24, 1847 by General Winfield Scott and his forces during the Mexican-American War. Scott's column arrived at la Plaza de Armas (the plaza today), located near present day Mount Wilson Boulevard and Sierra Madre Avenue, after a months long journey from Mexico City. The town grew rapidly due to its strategic location - just outside of San Bernardino County and close to both Los Angeles and Yuma Proving Grounds used for testing artillery rounds during the American Civil War. After Gold Rush days ended, many Anglo miners followed routing trails into this area looking for new goldfields rather than venture out into deeper hillsides rich with silver and gilded ore deposits as had been done in earlier parts of California. In1852 Isabella Canales discovered significant quantities of silver hidden among thick shrubs near her rancho east of Mount Wilson Boulevard; she named it La Silvera Concepcion because "silver" seemed like a very good omen given her previous experience finding lead ore nearby.
