El Centro is a city in the Inland Empire region of Southern California. With a population of over 153,000 as of 2010, El Centro is the third-largest city in Los Angeles County and one of the largest cities in Southern California by population. The Cahuenga River flows through downtown El Centro and forms a border with neighboring Vernon. The area that would become El Centro was first populated by Tongva people who lived along the banks of the Cahuenga River. They were expelled from their original homeland by Spanish missionaries in 1769 and moved to what is now Pasadena. The Tongva name for their new location was "Mendocino", meaning "place where trees grow." When Mexico gained independence from Spain on February 2, 1821, it declared itself an independent republic under the name of Mexican Republic. On July 8, 1846, during Mexican–American War (1846-1848), American forces burned down Mendocino's courthouse and other buildings to prevent its capture by General Mariano Guerrero's army. In 1848, Gold Rush fever swept across California after riches were discovered near Yuma Creek at Sutter's Mill;Cahuenga Valley became one of the most heavily mined regions in America due to its rich gold seams between 1849 and 1861. By 1870 there were more than 1 million people living in San Bernardino County alone as a result of this Gold Rush frenzy; many natives who had been invited to work on mining camps established themselves as farmers or ranchers scattered throughout what would become Riverside County when large sections became agricultural land during World War II following military construction projects initiated within El Paso County adjacent to Riverside City’s east side (the portion now part OfCity). In 1862 Gilbert Hahn organized a group including some Mexicans who had followed him from Oregon into southern California into what later became known as “The Forty Thieves” because they stole goods belonging to various Anglo settlers ranging anywhere from $5 worth of flour up to cattle for shipment back East; these men quickly realized that if they wanted food storage supplies or transportation they needed property south of Interstate 5 so they could construct stores and outposts nearer Indian Country long before any silver or gold content appeared on those properties. This group purchased 640 acres (243 hectares) south from Rancho Rincon del Rio de la Cañada de Gaviota just east of present day downtown El Centro on October 12th 1862 which included all present day Riverside City limits except for certain parcels north boundary extending westward past Menlo Park boundary then northerly along old Pico Boulevard across Shadowbrook Canyon South onto Riverside Mesa thence easterly along old Pico Boulevard cross Shadowbrook Canyon North thence southerly into modern day Riverside City Limits just inside eastside boundaries line today forming neighborhoods such as Yorba Linda/Shadowbrook Canyon/Pueblo Viejo with accessible points inland via I-5 freeway running thru them today) . This purchase allowed them entry into what would eventually be incorporated as Riverside County but which at that time was administered according to Spanish law with no English speaking residents allowed within its borders although “Rancho Rincon” lay within eastern San Bernardino Mountains dependency then part thereof until sold off following US annexation & thereafter jurisdiction transferred pursuant thereto….. The townsite located at 6200 feet elevation northeast corner superior stake 9 miles WSW Lobos Creek & 500 feet SSW Coyote Hills about 4 square miles site upon which Flagstaff Station stood appears on maps associated with prospecting operations begun early summer 1863 by A[ndrew] Halliday…& others map dated Sep 30 1865….At approximately 9:00 PM on Saturday September 10 1863 James Harvey entered upon claims heretofore claimed only by himself being over 7 miles SW corner Ranches [sic] 25N Longitude 151W latitude 5 degrees 29 minutes 36 seconds geodetic datum having been determined prior thereto by Surveyor John B[enjamin] Stephenson….It has been suggested that this coincided precisely with Halliday's purported discovery near contemporary Nugget Hill about 12 miles ENE Temescal Peak also situated on maps associated with prospecting operations beginning early summer 1863…..A claim heretofore claimed only by Don Fernando Carrillo also located 7 miles SW corner Ranches [sic] 25N Longitude 151W latitude 5 degrees 29 minutes 36 seconds geodetic datum having been determined prior thereto by Surveyor John B[enjamin] Stephenson……..If it did coincide it may have been accidental because Harvey appears not even mentioned among those surveyed designated responsible for locating & surveying this area…………..As far Back As 1860 There Were 3 Names For This Area Which Was Named Crescent City Afterloop Ulysses S Grant Which Goes To Shows How Much Things Change By Who Owns What All These Years Later

A number of companies had their headquarters here including United States Steel Corporation and Lockheed Martin Company. The town also saw significant population growth after World War II due to new housing developments and economic development across Kern County. The current downtown area was built between 1951-1957; however, much older buildings still remain largely intact today including many public buildings such as City Hall and San Fernando Cathedral which are among America's oldest surviving examples of Art Nouveau architecture. In recent years, El Centro has seen increasing redevelopment activity as it becomes increasingly popular for its unique mix of historical preservationism mixed with modern amenities like shopping malls and restaurants. Many old businesses have been reborn as updated tourist traps while some more traditional businesses have closed down but have been converted into luxury condos or office buildings (eighth Street near Main Street). nevertheless most residents continue to live within walking distance of all major attractions (including City Hall where exhibits about local history are available every day).
