El Centro is a city in San Diego County, California, United States. The population was 122,521 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of El Centro County and is part of the San Diego metropolitan area. The site of present-day El Centro was first inhabited by the Kumeyaay people in 1769. Spanish traders founded Mission San José de la Newa in 1821 and later renamed it Santiago de Compostela after St. James's Cathedral in Madrid, Spain. The mission had an attached pueblo which served as both a civil center and religious center for surrounding missions until 1846 when all but one of the Santa FeScripture Missionaries moved to nearby Soledad because of concerns over plague activity in Mexico City. In 1851, land was acquired fromby Juan Bautista Alvarado for $4,000 (). The town began to form with new buildings being erected beginning in 1852 including the first jail, courthouse and schoolhouse; this period is also documented by surveys done by Colonel John Cranch of US Army Engineers during his survey work on what would become downtown El Centro. In 1863 a fire destroyed most of downtown but due to donations from citizens many businesses were rebuilt or replaced including several mills that now make up the core of modern day Downtown El Centro A post office was established at Central Avenue & Broadway (now Main Street) on October 3rd, 1861 (), making El Centrico one of only two U.S towns to have an official postal address starting with "U." Other early residents included Aureliano Zuniga who settled near what is now MidtownElCentro; he opened a grocery store there in 1865 A waterworks was built soon afterwards providing water for shops and homes until 1906 whencoxwells-ized Arroyo Grande became available south central El centroid () giving rise to today's main shopping district centered around 5th Avenue & Broadway between Center and old Western Union Building . For most of its history western side streets aligned along Arroyo Grande formed West Side Highway while east side streets aligned along 6th Avenue formed East Side Highway . In 1926 portions of east side street were realigned northward forming South Central Boulevard which runs through much today's heartland business district Most recently development has occurred along 5th Ave & Broadway with apartment buildings lining Market Street between them as well as some high end retail spaces

El Centro is a small town located in Imperial County, California. The population was 6,636 at the 2010 census. El Centro is home to the University of California, Riverside and many other businesses and institutions. It also has a diverse history that can be found in its architecture, culture, and economy. The townsite that now makes up El Centro was first settled by Mexicans in 1851. The name "El Centro" comes from the Spanish word for "the center." At the time it was an inland stop on the southern route between San Diego and Bakersfield. By 1881, when it became part of Imperial County, there were over 2,000 residents living in what is now El Centro. What made El Centro so successful as a city during its early years were its natural resources such as coal and lumber. After World War II brought large numbers of American GI's back to El Centro and nearby towns including Del Norte (now Orange), the city struggled to keep up with their new community counterparts. However, after making some key investments in infrastructure like water systems and streetlights – which remain largely unchanged today – downtown finally began to thrive during this period of rapid development around it. During this time downtown also saw construction of several high-rise apartment buildings that still stand today – including one that stands at 553 feet tall (167 meters). This building played an important role during both Sixties counterculture movements due to its extremely tall windowsills which let people see right into Watts riots happening just blocks away on October 15th of that year - something that few buildings then could boast about! In recent years Downtown El Centropolse has seen an influx of newcomers who are looking for a more business-friendly environment with more services available within walking distance without having to drive or take buses elsewhere. This gentrification has led to increased traffic congestion on sidewalks near City Hall as well as decreased foot traffic overall throughout much of Pioneer Square - suburbs often known for being friendlier climates have taken notice!

The town quickly became an important trading center for goods brought overland from California and Oregon.
