El Centro is a city in southern California, located just north of Los Angeles. It is the seat of Kern County and has a population of 227,545 as of 2009. The name El Centro comes from Spanish for "the center." The city was founded by Mormon missionaries in 1847 and became an agricultural center during the Gold Rush. The cotton industry ended in the early 20th century, but El Centro traces its roots to agriculture because of its location on the San Joaquin River. In 1916, El Centro became one of the first American cities to fluoridate water supplies with it becoming one of only a few U.S. cities to do so. As a result, El Centro's water system is among the most advanced in the country. In addition to its downtown area which features a library, concert hall and art gallery, El Centro also contains several smaller neighborhoods including La Mesa and West Hills.

The Chumash people were among the first to arrive in what is now El Centro after migrating from central Mexico. In 1847, Mexican president Joaquín de la Vega authorized Juan Bautista Alvarado to build an irrigation canal through present-day Anaheim Hills to protect property that had been claimed by both him and his brother Bernardo Guerrero y Costilla. Alvarado named his new town after Jesus Christ – La Habana – in order to attract settlers who would help improve water supplies for his new community. The town's first post office opened in 1851; its name changed two times before it became El Centro in 1885. By 1870, La Habana had become a small fishing village with just over 100 residents when gold was discovered at Silliman Creek outsidepresent-day Anaheim Hills; within months, El Centro had developed into a bustling commercial center serving agriculturalists throughout Southern California and beyond. A large influx of European immigrants followed discovery of goldfields around 1880; these men founded businesses such as bakery, grocery store and flour mill owners along Mission Boulevard east of downtown Los Angeles before moving westward into present-day Orange County (then part of Mexico) following railroad construction that began nearby in 1892. Many key figureheads associated with early El CentRO include Father Cesar Chavez (founder/director/pioneer organizer of United Farm Workers), Medal Of Honor recipient John Dillingham (UCLA professor who developed air quality monitoring technology), Ricardo Lara (presidential candidate for LAX), Gilbert Arenas (owner/coach/player for Golden State Warriors) and George Steinbrenner (founder/CEO Hank Aaron Baseball Association).
