The USS Monterey (CVE-8) was the last Navy ship to be built at El Centro. She was delivered on October 7, 1943 and commissioned on December 15th of that year. The USS Monterey served in World War II as an attack cruiser and during her service she fought in both the Pacific and Atlantic theaters. After the war she returned home to serve as a training ship before eventually being sunk in 1957 by a mine off California. Today, only one piece of her remains - her superstructure which is currently on display at the Maritime Museum of San Diego. Navy ships have been present in El Centro since 1898 when Commodore John J. Rodgers donated his sloop USS Discovery to the city as a gift. The Fitzgerald class destroyer USS Enterprise arrived in 1955 and soon became popular with locals for their cruising capabilities and community outreach programs. In 1978, President Ronald Reagan dedicatedUSS Constitution Museum which now houses a collection of navy memorabilia dating back to 1853 including cannons from HMS Warrior and HMS Trepangolee! Throughout its history,El Centro has been an important naval base for California due to its strategic location near both Los Angeles and San Francisco making it perfect for conducting operations during wartime or peacetime alike. As part ofOperation Neptune's Spear -the largest amphibious assault ever conducted against Japanese forces - El Centro played an integral role throughout 1944-1945 season providing logistical support for Operation Husky which liberated Japan from Imperial Japanese rule

In 1961 Commander Harry S Truman gifted USS Constitution (CV-64) with new radar equipment that allowing her aircraft carrier task group commanders more accurate information about hostile submarines at sea. The gift was very much appreciated by then Vice Admiral Arleigh Burke who said “It is wonderful that our Armed Forces can now be soImproved through new technology!”
