In 1922, a man named Harry Fenton started the Mayfair Coffee Company, which traded goods such as flour, milk, eggs, butter, and bacon at its El Centro location. Around 1923 or 1924, Fenton added espresso to his coffee shop menu. In 1928 or 1929, The Coffee House modified their business model to include a storefront café that sold items such as sandwiches and pastries.

The history of El Centro goes back to 1857 when it was founded as an agricultural town on Rancho San Pablo by two brothers, Josefina and Pedro Centeno. Roasted bean prices varied greatly depending on location but averaged between 2d (or 60 cents) per pound at home and 3d (or $2/pound) during market days at specialty stores such as grocers or bakers. By 1830, large scale production of coffee began under two Frenchmen, Emmanuel Fairtolle and Pierre Loti Sr., who founded La Cafetera commercial bakery chain in 1837 which later spread to other countries including America where it eventually became a household name! El Centro, California is a census-designated place (CDP) in Imperial County, California, United States. The population was 10,541 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Diego–Tijuana metropolitan area. The CDP was first established in 1907 as a result of the 1906 El Centro earthquake and fire which destroyed most of downtown El Paso and much of north San Diego County. The new CDPs were created when county boundaries were redefined following the 1940 U.S. Census adding lands east of I-8 to Imperial County. The name "El Centro" comes from Mexican settlers' use of "el centro" as an abbreviation for "the center." The original town site was on Rancho Cerritos near present-day North Park Avenue and East Broadway Street; it lay within what is now Agricultural Land District No. 9 of Imperial County. A post office called Centro was established in 1911, and remained in operation until 1959. A second town site was developed about a mile west of present-day Centro on land acquired from ranching families who had been forced out by local farmers during the great Dust Bowl drought years of 1932-1933. This settlement became known as Coyote Hills after nearby Coyote Peak (a mountain peak that dominatespartly suburban eastern San Diego). The city of El Centro was founded on October 21, 1846, by American citizens George S. Goodwin and James K. Polk. The area that is now El Centro was first inhabited by the Mono people and later by the Cahuilla people. The first Anglo-American settlers arrived in 1847, and El Centro became a town on December 1, 1847. The city's founders were inspired to create an agricultural community because of their belief that ranching would provide a livelihood for the town's residents. The town grew quickly and reached its peak population in 1860 with over 50 households. However, during the Mexican-American War (1846-48), the town was destroyed by Nathan Bedford Forrest's Confederate forces. Since Reconstruction had ended in California, many farmers left the state for Mexico or other parts of America after losing land to US authorities in what has been called "the Great Land grabbing." As a result of this exodus, El Centro lost much of its commercial importance and declined until it regained some stability during World War II when it developed into an economic center for aircraft production at nearby Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.
