The El Cerrito Valley is a geographically diverse place with a rich history. The valley was first settled by Native Americans in the late 18th century, and it became an agricultural center during the 19th century. The first documented soldier in the area was Captain John C. Fremont, who served in the California Battalion of volunteers during the Mexican-American War. During World War II, El Cerrito Valley was heavily bombed by American bombers and shells, leaving large numbers of buildings and people destroyed. The history of the El Cerrito Army Base begins in 1917, when General John J. Pershing ordered the construction of a military post in this small city on the central coast of California. The base was initially called Camp Cooke until 1920, when it was renamed El Cerrito Army Depot to honor then-Major General John F. Robertson, commander of American forces inthe Spanish-American War and director of Military Intelligence for the United States at Fort MacArthur on Malabar Island. In 1924, General George Custer assigned Major General Arthur A. Macdonald as Commanding Officer of El Cerrito Army Depot, which became one of America’s largest army installations and played an important role in World War II and later conflicts such as the Vietnam War. In 1967, El CerritoArmy Base was transferred from the U.S. Air Force to the Army and remains active today as an army installation with over 119 buildings including barracks, a hospital/residence complex, two airfields (Endern Field and Northwood Airfield), three ammunition magazines and a parade ground used for military ceremonies such as Armistice Day or San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge dedication ceremonies (which are now held at Fort Mason).
El Cerrito is a city in San Francisco County, California, United States. The population of the city was 64,033 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern side of San Francisco Bay and is part of the East Bay region. El Cerrito has been inhabited by Native Americans for over 10,000 years and became a small town after European settlement in 1849. It experienced rapid growth during World War II as a naval shipbuilding center before declining during the late 20th century as technology advanced and jobs moved to other parts of California. However, recent growth has resulted in increased development around Orinda and nearby cities; this has led to an increase in poverty and crime rates within its boundaries. The first Europeans to arrive in present-day El Cerrito were Spanish soldiers who traveled down what is now called Mission Street between 1847 and 1848 while they fought against Mexican forces under Santa Clara Governor José Joaquín de Urquiza y Costilla. They found living among these people who spoke their language already an ancient custom since they had resided there for centuries before that time. The name "El Cerrito" means "the place where trees grow." The first permanent residents were three men from Russia named Ivan Egorovich Dostoevsky (1796–1860), Fyodor Dostoevsky (1811–1881) and Dmitry Ivanovitch Raskolnikov (1800–1875). On November 1st, 1849, four days after General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo's failed attempt to sign a treaty with Mexico City that would have ceded California to that country, American President James K Polk sent orders eastward ordering all military posts along both coasts be prepared for war with Mexico if hostilities broke out over disputed territory near Alta California including what is now El Cerrito Creek bed which lay just south of today's downtown area of San Francisco proper on land claimed by both countries since 1777 when Spain acquired it from Juan Bautista de Anza pursuant to his Treaty of Cahuenga Creek which ended the Mexican–American War (1798). Commodore John Akins ordered USS Discovery sailing on February 16th 1850 latitude 37°06´N longitude 122°27´W en route from Monterey Harbor bound for Acapulco loaded with troops specifically aimed at suppressing any Mexican incursions into Californian waters northeast of Point Reyes Lighthouse off Petaluma bay northwest of Tubbs Island when Notice was given through Acting Lieutenant Commander Gideon Wellesley Perry commanding HMS Discovery that he had sighted land bearing Latitude 37 degrees 06' N Longitude 122 degrees 27' W about 12 miles distant bearing Northward about 333 miles distance from us

El Cerrito is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 46,521 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern bank of the San Pablo River and bordered by Berkeley to the east and Contra Costa County to the south. The El Cerrito area has been inhabited for over 10,000 years and is thought to be one of the oldest continuously occupied areas in Northern California. The name comes from Spanish meaning "big head". In 1846, during Mexican–American War campaign against Mexico, General José Joaquín Arguelles unsuccessfully attacked El Cerrito with cannons while under cover of night; this led to American forces burning down many homes in what is now downtown El Cerrito. In 1847, Francisco Palou published an article entitled "Introducing Our new Settlement", which described how he had founded a small town called Alvarado on Hwy 101 north of Stockton with about 50 people. He named it after his friend José Antonio María de Alvarado y Castro (1784-1855), who had fought for independence from Spain ateliering Santa Clara Valley near Monterey Bay. On February 19th 1848 a group of men from San Francisco organized as Zangwill's Battalion under Captain James Phelan traveled by stagecoach from San Francisco to Tiburon and then walked 150 miles across country before arriving at Alvarado on March 5th They were met by Juan Bautista Rosales y Valdez who was appointed governor of Californias new territory extending along modern day Palo Alto/El Cerrito Boulevard corridor northward into Contra Costa County. After two weeks they departed for their original destination but returned lateMarch because of bad weather conditions near Hayward they camped out until April 2nd when they reached Auburn where they rendezvoused with Phelan's Battalion which had already arrived there On April 4th early morning local residents heard cannon fire coming from Oakland hills so they all went outside and saw General Arguelles march towards them with his entire army including artillery taking position behind some trees just off busy Highway 101 between MacArthur Boulevard and University Avenue
