El Cerrito, California is a town in Contra Costa County, California. It was founded on October 15, 1868 by the surveyor General George A. Higginson and the town's first postmaster, Hiram S. Evans. The first store in El Cerrito was opened by John Davenport in 1875. The first coffeehouses were established in El Cerrito in 1876 by J.B.Watson and Wm. Hite and continued to be operated until about 1945 when they were closed due to lack of customers or competition from grocery stores that had begun opening up throughout the town at that time. The last coffeehouse business operating within El Cerrito proper closed down on November 9th, 1944 after serving over sixty years to its customers and employees alike! El Cerrito, California is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 16,691 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in the San Francisco Bay Area and one of the most ethnically diverse cities in North America. The first European settlement in El Cerrito occurred on January 24, 1846 when three men from Sacramento arrived by ship on shore. They named their new town "Eritrea" after their home country of Egypt. The town grew slowly until it became an important port on San Francisco Bay due to its location close to the water and its deep-water harbor. In 1859, ABRA (British North America Railway) constructed a line from Oakland through El Cerrito to Walnut Creek and then north to Fremont; this made El Cerrito an important agricultural center for the eastern slant of Contra Costa County. In 1916, Commodore John D Sails donated land near Point Reyes Station for a Naval Air Station; this provided impetus for development around NAS Point Reyes Station which included such notable landmarks as El Cajon Pierpoint and radar station Hilltop Airport. After World War II ended with Japan's surrender, military personnel were discharged and many moved into the new housing developments built adjacent to NAS Point Reyes Station such as Hunters Point Shipyards and Marineland Park. A major fire destroyed much of downtown El Cerrito during 1967–1968; however, rebuilding began immediately with many new businesses opening up including ABC Department Store which anchored what was once an industrial district now full of art galleries, restaurants, stores and homes dating back to early 20th century ranch houses

In 1945, following passage of the National Security Act which granted sweeping authority to the United States military, El Cerrito became one of several towns within 24 hours of San Diego that received direct bombing notice from Washington D.C.. This led to rapid growth for industry along Naval Air Station North Island ( NAS North Island), which expanded from 1 acres in 1940 to more than 5 square miles by 1960 In 1964-1965 the City Council established Parkland Recreation Area west of Harbor Freeway adjacent to Naval Air Station North Island; it has since grown into one of Northern California's most popular urban parks with over 175 million visitors annually .
