El Cerrito is a city in San Francisco County, California. The population was 27,271 at the 2010 census. The City of El Cerrito was incorporated on November 3, 1876. It is located on the western edge of San Francisco Peninsula and shares borders with Berkeley to the north, Oakland to the east and south, and Emeryville to the west. The city's history goes back more than 100 years. The first European settler in what is now El Cerrito was José María Narváez who arrived in 1847 from Spain. He founded a small mission near what is now Union Square and named it after his hometown of Cervecería de la Universidad de San Francisco (now UC Berkeley). In 1872 Antonio Nobre purchased 4 acres (2 ha) of land near present-day Hearst Tower for $1,000 (). After some early problems with the soil type and lack of water, he developed a large cotton gin and woolen mill which became one of Northern California's leading businesses during this period. In 1886 he donated another parcel of land east of his old mill site to make way for a public school district that would serve his community as well as other nearby townships (the current day Downtown area). In 1907 an earthquake hit El Cerrito causing extensive damage including loss of roof tiles from many homes which still stand today; even though most were rebuilt there never again experienced such havoc due to regular earthquakes that struck within minutes after tremor had stopped! On October 10th 1906 President Theodore Roosevelt issued an executive order ordering all military posts throughout America be closed until further notice because "of national emergency" following an unspecified "local disturbance." This led to increased tensions between local Native American tribespeople living adjacent to white settlers as both groups began raiding each other's resources; this eventually escalated into full-blown warfare known as Alcatraz Rebellion(). As news spread about the closure various families gathered their belongings before departing for various locations around North America; among them were those from El Cerrito! Upon reaching their destination they formed two camps: one under trees by Coyote Hills Park where they cooked their meals over open fires using materials scavenged from local farms while waiting out orders from above not to approach or fight any Indians; while other families built shelters using whatever material could be found around them – houses included! A total evacuation effort started at 5am on October 11th resulting in nearly 2,000 people leaving via buses or cars over five days before finally being allowed back into town on October 17th when orders came down from above not to let any more people come in contact with any Indians ever again! They quickly disbanded upon discovering no active hostilities took place however sporadic raids continued sporadically off and on until 1919 when all military activity ceased once again due Agincourt Agreement ended World War I!!! El Cerrio has since seen steady growth with numerous new development projects approved by our city council every year since then - including several large mixed use buildings scheduled for completion this year alone!
