El Cerrito is a census-designated place in San Francisco County, California. The population of El Cerrito was 40,959 at the 2010 census. It is located east of downtown San Francisco on the eastern edge of the city limits. The first European to visit El Cerrito was Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo in 1542. The small town that developed around Cabrillo's landing was named for him, and he granted it land grant in 1602. In 1846, when California became a state, El Cerrito became part of San Mateo County. In 1892, during the last years of Mexican rule over California, General Mariano Juárez ordered his troops to burn down some homes and businesses in El Cerrito as part of an operation known as "The Destruction of Alta Californiana." This event is also celebrated annually as Hispanic Heritage Month by the City of San Francisco. In 1906, after two days' fighting with Ulysses S. Grant's forces at Palo Alto Bridge, Mexican general Victoriano Huerta surrendered control over most of Mexico to American forces under General John J. Pershing at what is now known as Chula Vista Boulevard near Highway 101 (now called US 101). As a result of this battle and others during World War I and World War II within the United States military occupation zones in southern California (the so-called Southwest Border Zone), many people from El Cerrito moved into other parts of San Francisco or Northern California during those times; today very few residents remain who were born or raised hereabouts between 1886 and 1966. In 1846, the California Gold Rush began and by 1850, El Cerrito had become a town. The first post office was opened in 1851. In 1852, the "El Cerrito Review" was founded and in 1861, a fire destroyed most of the original buildings in downtown El Cerrito. The town rebuilt and soon became an important center for trade and commerce. The first library was built in 1865. During World War II, El Cerrito served as a military base for the United States Air Force because of its strategic location at the mouth of San Francisco Bay. In 1960, El Cerrio's population reached 25,000 people and it incorporated as a city. Today, there are over 50K residents living in El Cerrito including 21% who are Hispanic or Latino with an estimated total income over $75MM annually.
